Life is stacked in layers. On the forest floor, in the undergrowth, halfway up the trunks, and way up in the canopy where birds feel impossibly far away.
One minute it’s a giant owl butterfly pressed against a tree, wings looking like bark until it moves. The next, a red dragonfly landing perfectly on a single leaf like it owns the place. Hairy caterpillars crawling along bamboo, ants marching through ferns, flowers blooming in places that feel untouched.
And then there are the bullet ants, the one thing you never forget. Huge. Hyper-alert. Touch one branch and they instantly swarm, aggressive and fearless. You learn very quickly where not to put your hands.
Everything here feels alive, watching, reacting. The jungle isn’t quiet. It’s dense, thick, overwhelming, and completely unreal.
I’ve never seen anything like it.

On the way in, tucked inside narrow rock crevices, we spotted tailless whip spiders which are ancient-looking arachnids that cling motionless to cave walls, sensing vibrations more than light.
Then the cave opened up.
Inside were dozens of Seba’s short-tailed fruit bats (Carollia perspicillata), clustered together and hanging low from the ceiling. We used red flashlights so we could observe them without disturbing their behavior. Standing quietly at the entrance, the bats began flying straight toward us, exiting the cave and passing just inches away.
No crowds. No noise. Just our small group, our guide, and the sound of wings slicing through the dark.
For a moment it genuinely felt like stepping into a Batman scene except this was real and happening deep in the rainforest.

As the sun came up, the jungle slowly revealed itself, mist rolling through the trees, little clouds forming in the valley, birds calling from every direction. Everything felt alive, but still half asleep.
Standing there, watching the Amazon wake up, it hit me how unreal this place is. No rush, no noise, just layers of green and sound stretching forever.

We watched this small family quietly moving through the bamboo and shrubs, completely at home in the misty forest above the Amazon basin.
Our guide explained that they were likely reintroduced here after being rescued from illegal captivity. Not native to this exact area, but free, thriving, and choosing to stay. A reminder that nature can recover when it’s given the chance. 🌿🐒

The air got thinner, the mountains steeper, and then suddenly… clouds.
This wasn’t the Amazon yet, not the jungle people imagine.
We were still high in the Andes, driving at the level of the clouds, where the mountains slowly begin to turn green.
This is the cloud forest. The very beginning of the Amazon rainforest.
