We showed up way past dark and had a hilarious (and slightly stressful) time locating our campsite — shoutout to the fellow campers who helped us find it in the pitch black 🤣🔥.
We woke up early the next morning for a cave tour and WOW — this place was incredible. The caverns are massive, cool, and full of life. We learned about the bats that live here (and yes… they were literally flying around while we were inside 😳🦇), the rare blind salamanders, and even saw a waterfall inside the cave 💦🪨.

We made a quick overnight stop while continuing our route home from Florida to California and booked a last minute site at Galveston Island State Park. Honestly, it surprised us in the best way, who doesn’t like falling asleep to the sound of waves?
It’s an easy, no-frills stop and super affordable compared to many coastal parks—perfect for vanlife or trailers.

We got to see some cool and very unique bikes though.
And while Texas beaches aren’t Florida or California beaches (we’re spoiled, we know)… a beach in Texas?! We’ll take it!🏖️

We have to back up for a minute in our travel posts because we don’t want to skip sharing this amazing hidden gem with you! It’s one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen 🤍🌊
Powdery white sand that feels like sugar under your feet and shockingly clear emerald water that looks straight out of the Caribbean. It’s nestled along the Gulf Islands National Seashore in between Navarre Beach and Pensacola, along Hwy 399. This stretch of the Emerald Coast feels wild, peaceful, and untouched — just miles of amazing shoreline and unreal views.

After leaving New Orleans, we needed a safe place to sleep for the night. I scrambled through the apps and booked a campsite in the bayou… because when you only have two days in Louisiana, you go all in.

Because how’s that for a trail name 😳🤣
Two Californians with zero gator experience decided to take the loop trail… and honestly, we were scared. We headed straight for the bridge (higher ground = safer, right?). Halfway across, a gator swam straight toward us like a little puppy—then just hung out like we were either lunch or about to toss him a snack 😬😜
The turtles weren’t phased at all, swimming right next to him like it was no big deal. The last stretch? A narrow path with water on both sides. If a gator popped out, we were DONE. We moved FAST through that section.
We loved this stop and campground—definitely add it to your list for an authentic Louisiana experience. Campground review coming next 👀🌿

Started the day at the legendary Café du Monde—beignets, powdered sugar everywhere, literally…because we decided to eat on the park bench outside the famous cafe.
Tip: Eat at a table!😜☕️🍩
We walked over to St. Louis Cathedral, right near Jackson Square. It’s one of the oldest cathedrals in the U.S., and seeing it in the morning while it was quiet made it even more special. The details, the history, and how peaceful it felt really stood out.
Then we strolled through Bourbon Street while it was still calm—no music yet, just stories in every building and so much cool character. We were on a time crunch and had just a couple of hours to check it out before getting back on the road.
We ended the morning at the Mississippi Riverfront, walking along the river, watching the boats go by, and taking it all in. ⚜️✨

This was another pay-to-walk pier and we heard people see lots of sharks off this pier. We got here right as the sun was setting making it hard to see through the water without enough daylight. But the sunset, full moon, and incredible white sandy beaches made up for it!

It’s true!
How cool is this?
We found a beach that has fossilized great white shark teeth along the shore in front of a shipwreck.
We actually stopped to see the shipwreck:

Aptos, CA
While walking along the beach we noticed people bent low and dragging their feet through the sand. We didn’t think much of it…there’s lots of rocks, shells, and sea glass.
All of a sudden, a lady walked up and said, “Look what I found!” It was a large fossilized great white shark tooth!
You can imagine our surprise!😮
We immediately shifted our gaze from the shipwreck to the sandy/rocky shoreline in search of our own shark teeth.
We spoke to another lady who said she’s found three over the years (none as big as this find though!)
Unfortunately, we were just passing through and didn’t have much time to continue our search. But you can be sure this will be a destination stop on our next trip through this area!

🥾This hidden gem is located in the redwood forest near UCSC, just a short walk from Stevenson parking lot.
🐶It’s dog friendly from this spot but if you choose to do the longer hike (beautiful views)…it starts in the State Park and is not dog friendly.

This hike was so worth it…the hubby even agreed *after* we finished!😜

We did this hike in the spring of course (note the abundant water flow) because of the extreme heat in the summer.
