Historic Navajo (Diné) weavings from the collection of the late Frank Stella.

As Sarah Stafford Turner notes, “Stella’s Black Paintings, intense and rigid, confront the eye with faint, thread-like lines running parallel across the canvas. But, he did not invent all of these stylistic motifs; he recognized the same geometric precision and holistic pigments in the centuries-old tradition of Navajo handwoven rugs and blankets.”

Arader Galleries is proud to host at our 72nd Street gallery for a special exhibition and sale featuring works from Frank Stella’s personal collection of Navajo blankets and rugs.

On view from May 15 – June 10, this presentation brings together extraordinary examples of Navajo weaving — celebrated for their bold geometry, powerful color, and timeless modernity. Long admired by Stella for their striking visual language, these textiles blur the line between fine art, design, and cultural history.

We invite you to explore the exhibition at 29 East 72nd Street, just off Madison Avenue.

Free and open to the public daily from 11am–5pm.

An extraordinary group of Navajo (Diné) weavings from the collection of the late modernist artist Frank Stella (1936–2024) will be publicly exhibited and offered for sale by

Open from 14 May–10 June at the Arader Galleries in New York City, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to step inside the visual world of one of the most important American artists of the 20th century through the works he lived with for decades.

Collected over four decades, this group of weavings reflects Stella’s enduring fascination with geometry, abstraction, colour and optical movement. Dating primarily from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the weavings reveal a remarkable period of experimentation within Diné textile traditions, where bold patterning and saturated colour produced weavings with extraordinary visual energy.

Inside his Richard Meier-designed home in New York’s West Village neighborhood, artist Frank Stella covered walls and layered underfoot chromatic works with arresting patterns of strong linear shapes of Navajo rugs and textiles. On view from May 15 through June 10, 40 pieces from Stella’s private collection will go on view for the first time with Peter Pap, a leading purveyor of antique rugs and historic textiles. One of the parts I enjoy most about these shows is getting to share a little of what I’ve learned over the years. Whether it’s a story behind a rug or an explanation of how it was made, it’s always a pleasure to connect with people who are curious and appreciative.

If you’re planning to visit this weekend, we’re set up on the East Terrace at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

We’ve brought a selection of rugs we’ve been saving especially for this show. Hope to see you here.
