Despite massive anti-poverty policies (mainly for the benefit of the working class), millions of people were still homeless or living in grossly inadequate housing and favelas. The plight of those living "sem teto, sem terra," with no roof or land, was hidden away, far from the international media.
"Copacabana Palace, Brazil" by Peter Bauza is a story of those people. It chronicles 300 families who, over the past decade, have been living in dilapidated unfinished buildings in a condominium known to some as Jambalaya (a local TV program), or to others as Copacabana Palace (named after the grand 5‑star hotel on Copacabana Beach).
The background history: some thirty years ago, a Brazilian construction company built a series of condominiums for middle-class residents in this area 60 km from central Rio de Janeiro. But many of the buildings were abandoned because of problems with both construction and financing and were left empty for extended periods. Homeless people moved in and have remained, even returning after being evicted.
People here live in extreme poverty, without the basic utilities of water, sanitation, and electricity. These buildings are also precarious and dangerous. The environment is always damp, with stagnant water and human waste causing severe health problems such as dengue fever, meningitis, gastroenteritis, and skin conditions. Water damage has also caused floors to collapse (as pictured above). Yet, many families are reluctant to leave and are willing to face the risks. Ricardo is one of the people who chose to stay.

Tent on a tent inside the PoC camp with no intimacy, a paradise for health epidemics. Two years ago, Nyalel Kuong, from Leer, Southern Unity State, had to come to the PoC in Bentiu in search of a safer life. The fighting and killing were too severe to stay in Leer. Separated from her former husband, the mother of 5 children took over all responsibilities Nyalel runs today a small self-made teashop inside a tent in the refugee camp..

MSF relies in Bentiu on new and modern OT and a large medical team, enabling to handle more than 90% of all severe cases. During the peak season, the hospital offers up to 170 beds, outreach malaria testing and treatment points, among many other activities. The Bentiu PoC is one of the largest UNMISS protected IDP camp (Internal Displaced People/Refugees) in South Sudan and shelter approx. 115000 people over the last years.
