I spent the winter photographing the Southern Lakes caribou and the most reliable place I found them is along the Alaska highway near Judas Creek and Squanga Lake. As well as the Tagish Road near the ten mile road. The caribou have beaten well worn paths as the move from the forest to the highway and back. It seems they like to lick the tiny amount of salts on the road.
Every year, around 10 caribou are hit by vehicles on the road. Usually, they are pregnant caribou, so around 20 caribou are killed each year. What can you do?
Slow down in those areas when you are driving. If you see caribou, flash your hazards at oncoming vehicles, so they know to slow down. The highway is incredibly busy with semi-trucks driving North and South. Those folks don't know the caribou hotspots, or have any investment in the Southern Lakes caribou herds. Give them the heads up by flashing your hazards.

This winter, I had the privilege of photographing caribou in my backyard around Whitehorse and it was a grand adventure. I was blown away with the caribou we have here. Working with Kwanlin Dun, the Southern Lakes Caribou Recovery Program, Carcross Tagish and Teslin Tlingit Council. What an honour. We are lucky to live where we live!!!
Wolves have really short lives, they are lucky to live 2 to 3 years, but Lynx live surprisingly long lives...in the 10-15 year range....and up to 25 years. Crazy. This is going to be a good few years for this guy, as the Snowshoe Hare population is so high.
Funny behind-the-scenes moment for y’all: when we drove to Klukshu, no one was at home, they’d gone out moose hunting, a neighbour told us. So Pete and I trekked up the Haines highway, found a vantage point, and glassed the valley below, looking for their hunting party. I was skeptical, but Pete saw a glint of light, found Chuck’s truck—needle in a haystack, I’m telling you—and we followed their ATV trail in. Not many photographers could just roll into a family’s moose hunting party like that, but it’s obvious Pete is more than a photographer to the Humes; they welcomed Pete and I in with open arms and big laughs, then we drove to Klukshu for coffee and stories. I felt lucky to be along for the ride, as a writer, on this one. Thank you to Peter, Chuck, Barb, Elder Doris Allen, and researcher Dr. Doug Clark for teaching me so much.

This was 4 or 5 years ago, when the aurora would only appear about once a week. I wish I had done the project over the last few years, as the Northern Lights have really been popping off. They seem to be showing up every 2nd night the last two winters.
I love bears. They remind me of my dog, Luke Skywalker. They have personality. Often more than us humans. These bears I found along a Yukon River salmon creek. In my 10 years of working on salmon creeks in the Yukon, I’ve seen a huge reduction of bears. Not from hunting, but because the salmon are almost gone. There is just not as much food.
