Multi-grafted pawpaw tree with 11+ different cultivars on one tree. Many of these came from the KSU trial orchard.

I usually don’t graft this many cultivars onto a single tree because keeping track of everything becomes a challenge, but all of my potted trees are being saved for Pawpaw Fest this September.

This tree’s main purpose will be producing scion wood for future grafting projects. The pencils you see are there to protect the newly grafted scions from birds landing on them and snapping them off.

Always experimenting, always growing

Our willow allee is made up of different willow species grown specifically for weaving. Every year — sometimes every two years — we cut them back at head height to encourage fresh, flexible sprouts. This traditional practice, called pollarding, helps the shoots grow beyond animal browse while producing long, straight, healthy rods perfect for weaving.

Caring for willow this way keeps the regrowth vibrant, resilient, and endlessly useful.

And of course, our beautiful willow dome and circular straw bale home create a magical environment that’s not only inspiring, but deeply functional too.

A little glimpse of permaculture in action ✨

Hugel it up!

Hugelkultur—literally “Mound Culture” in German—is the ancient magic of turning buried wood into fertile, self-hydrating garden beds. As the wood decomposes, it soaks up water, draws in beneficial fungi, and turns into rich soil for whatever you want to grow. Paw paws, berries, veggies—you name it, hugel beds love it.

I’ll be digging into hugelkultur, permaculture, edible landscaping, and fav fruits in my upcoming monthly online sessions, where you can bring your own Q&A and design questions straight to me. Find all the details in the bio link or at

Final 24 Hours: Help Plant the Seeds for Generations 🌱

We’re down to the final 24 hours of the Kickstarter campaign—and this is the moment that truly matters.

This isn’t just another project asking for support. It’s a ginormous opportunity to bring something meaningful into the world: a vision for edible landscaping rooted in permaculture principles, and a practical, inspiring book that helps people turn that vision into reality.

If we reach our goal, we help plant seeds—literally and figuratively—that can nourish families, communities, and ecosystems for generations to come. If we fall short, this resource—and the momentum behind it—may be lost.

We all get a lot of requests. It’s easy to scroll past.

But this one is different.

This campaign is about:

Reimagining our landscapes as living, productive ecosystems

Giving people the tools and knowledge to grow their own food sustainably

Restoring land in ways that are beautiful, resilient, and regenerative

Creating something that continues to give back year after year

Think of it as planting a seed today that will keep bearing fruit far into the future.

If you’ve been considering supporting, now is the time.

If you believe in this mission, please help us cross the finish line.

👉 Contribute if you can link in bio

👉 Share with someone who cares about sustainability, food systems, or the future of our landscapes

👉 Help us turn this vision into something real

Let’s make this happen—together.

With gratitude,

Michael

P.S. The next 24 hours will decide everything. Your support right now can make the difference between this idea fading—or flourishing.

It’s time to get your Herb Spiral On!

Edible architecture at its best.

Free, short webinar to bring your herb spiral dreams to life. Link in bio. * Illustrations from ‘Edible Landscaping with a Permaculture Twist’

An herb spiral is a space-efficient and sustainable way to grow a variety of herbs in a small area. The unique spiral shape creates different microclimates—drier at the top for sun-loving herbs like rosemary and thyme, and more moist at the bottom for basil and parsley. The stacked stones retain heat, extending the growing season, while also providing habitat for beneficial insects that help balance landscape ecology. Herb spirals conserve water, reduce maintenance, and can be built anywhere, even on patios or poor soil, making them a practical and beautiful addition to any garden.

Why the Spiral?

The garden spiral is like a snail shell, with stone spiraling upward to create multiple micro-climates and a cornucopia of flavors on a small footprint. Spirals can come in any size to fit any space, from an urban courtyard to an entire yard. You don’t even need a patch of ground, as they can be built on top of patios, pavement, and rooftops. You can spiral over an old stump or on top of poor soil.

By building up vertically, you create more growing space, make watering easy, and lessen the need to bend over while harvesting. To boot, spirals add instant architecture and year-round beauty to your landscape: the perfect garden focal point.

One of the beauties of an herb spiral is that you are creating multiple microclimates in a small space. The combination of stones, shape, and vertical structure offers a variety of planting niches for a diversity of plants. The stones also serve as a thermal mass, minimizing temperature swings and extending the growing seasons. Whatever you grow in your spiral, it will pump out a great harvest for the small space it occupies. #herbs #gardening #architecture #permaculture #gardenlife
Splish Splash look who’s the in the New York Times!

Move over lawn it’s time for a Food Forest.

NYT piece out today on my work with Food Forests, the new Fruit Patch App, and creative ways to transition lawn into a fruitfull haven.

We need practical solutions - and media to highlight them. Much gratitude to Margaret Roach, a shining light in an often obscure world of media for this epic capture - may it spark a fire that ignites a Transformational Food Forest Network.

Digital article linked in bio. Print on Sunday. If you get it - share it as that’s how fruit trees will get planted.
