The center operates entirely on donations. It provides not only food, clothing, hygiene, and daily transport — but most importantly, medical care and treatments that the children need to fight their illness. All the children suffer from cancer, and the staff shows incredible dedication every day.
Alisa had long wanted to help children facing serious illness. After searching across Africa, she found this center — one of the very few of its kind on the continent. She taught the children literacy, math, and foreign languages. She also brought a supply of cancer medicines, specifically requested by the center, which are often hard to find locally. In addition, she raised funds — enough to help purchase two small electric vehicles to transport the children to and from hospitals. She was even featured in a local Ethiopian newspaper.
Right now, the center is going through a difficult time. Their original building was demolished, and they were temporarily relocated to a school compound. They are now waiting for the government to allocate land, after which they’ll need to raise around $300,000 to build a new permanent home.
Thanks to her efforts, we’re seeing new hotels across the regions, better infrastructure, and the launch of world-class cultural spaces — including a beautiful new Science museum.
The Italians, under General Oreste Baratieri, wanted to turn Ethiopia into a colony. But they underestimated both the unity of Ethiopians and their firepower — supplied in part by Russia, which sent military advisors and weapons to help. Thousands died, and the Italians were forced to sign a treaty recognizing Ethiopia’s full independence — the only African country to resist colonization during the Scramble for Africa.
🛡️ Fun fact: Empress Taytu not only led troops into battle, but she also cut off the Italians’ water supply — a brilliant strategic move.
📿 Ethiopia is also home to one of the world’s oldest Christian traditions — Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. It split from other Christian churches in the 5th century, keeps many Old Testament practices (like kosher-style fasting and Saturday sabbath), and still uses Ge’ez, an ancient liturgical language. Unlike Russian or Greek Orthodoxy, Ethiopian churches are often circular, with sacred drums and chanting echoing through incense-filled
Built in the 12th–13th centuries by King Lalibela, they were designed to be a “New Jerusalem” after Christian pilgrims could no longer reach the Holy Land. But here’s the twist: they weren’t built — they were excavated from the ground, chiseled out of a single block of rock from top to bottom.
There are 11 churches total, connected by tunnels and passageways. The most famous is Bete Giyorgis (St. George’s Church) — shaped like a perfect cross and carved 15 meters deep into the earth. Legend says angels helped finish it.
The churches are still in use today, part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, one of the world’s oldest Christian traditions. Services are held in Ge’ez and Amharic, and every January during Timket (Epiphany), thousands of pilgrims in white robes fill the town in celebration.
He brought schools, hospitals, roads, and Ethiopia’s first written constitution. He also helped found the Organization of African Unity and made Ethiopia a symbol of African independence.
🌧️ One legendary moment: during a 1954 visit to Mexico, a severe drought had paralyzed the region. When Selassie landed, rain began to fall. People saw it as a miracle — and gave him a hero’s welcome.
He often stayed at the Ghion Hotel in Addis Ababa, now a historic site.
But in 1974, a Marxist military coup overthrew him. In 1975, while under house arrest, he died suddenly. Official cause: illness. But many believe he was secretly murdered by the new regime — a truth never officially acknowledged.
The man who replaced him was Mengistu Haile Mariam, a brutal military dictator who ruled from 1977 to 1991.
Mengistu launched the Red Terror, a campaign of mass arrests, torture, and executions. Tens of thousands were killed. He also mismanaged the economy and blocked foreign aid during famines — causing millions to suffer and starve.
He fled to Zimbabwe in 1991 and still lives there in exile.
