May me made some choices… 😂
1.5 days left and we are VERY ready for summer 😂☀️
Here’s my last-minute attempt at some low prep end-of-year fun for my kiddos. Please ignore my questionable drawing skills and the end-of-May classroom piles in the background. 😅
Thank you to my wonderful librarian for recommending What’s Inside a Caterpillar Cocoon? for our butterfly life cycle inquiry! 🐛🦋 It’s packed full of fascinating facts, beautifully illustrated, and kept my first graders completely engaged. We loved learning more about what happens inside the chrysalis and asking all kinds of wonder-filled questions along the way. Such a perfect nonfiction addition to our life cycle studies! #inquirybasedlearning #butterflylifecycle #lifecycles #nonfictionforkids #classroombook
We read Don’t Trust Fish and let’s just say… first grade had some STRONG opinions 😂🐟

After reading, we jumped into opinion writing by answering: Do you trust fish? and why?

From “yes because they’re cute” to “no because they might bite,” my first graders backed up their thinking with reasons.

A simple, engaging way to introduce opinion writing without overcomplicating it!

Sometimes the simplest games are the ones that stick.
We used a 120 chart and partnered up. One student secretly circled a number, and the other had to figure it out by asking questions like “Is it greater than 22?” or “Is it less than 56?”
That’s it.
No prep.

They were practicing:
• comparing numbers
• using math vocabulary (greater than/less than)
• narrowing down possibilities

Save this one for those days when you need something quick that still gets them thinking
We read Don’t Feed the Coos! and it was an instant favorite!
We’re just starting opinion writing this week, so this was our little preview…
👉 Would you feed the coos or not?
Sticky notes + big opinions = the best combo.
And the class consensus was a strong NO — mostly because “they poo everywhere” 💀
A simple, silly way to get them thinking, sharing, and backing up their ideas before we officially dive in.

Morning meeting this week 🤍
Just some post-its with word parts and they put them together to make real two syllable words.
Simple, but they were so into it.
Keeping our writing station simple lately and it’s been a game changer ✏️
Just paper, mentor texts, and student examples—and the kids are doing AMAZING things with it.
Our poetry unit has been such a joy. They’re playing with rhyme and writing some of their best work yet!

Yes, I work in a public school.
Yes, I have a required curriculum.
Yes, I still use inquiry-based learning — every single day.

The key? I stay rooted in the what, but flexible in the how.
Even within pacing guides and standards, there’s space to honor student wonder, invite curiosity, and make learning feel meaningful.

Inquiry isn’t a separate subject.
It’s a mindset.
A way of honoring thinking.
A way of making the curriculum theirs.

💬 What’s one way you bring curiosity into your classroom?
After a little pause (because: life, right?), I’m hopping back into this space with a quick reintroduction.
I’m Tiffany — teacher, mom, romance reader, and forever curious about how we grow little minds with joy and purpose.
Whether you’re here for morning meeting ideas, inquiry-based inspiration, or playful learning — I’m so glad you’re here. Do we have anything in common?
