“The red envelope is a core childhood memory of mine,” Albert told us. “They were given out during celebrations and gatherings. If I didn’t want to go to a family gathering, the incentive would be the red envelopes.
“I also remember the beautiful variety of the lai see. The shiny gold Chinese characters. The colorful and playful designs that had the year of the animal. In a way the Red Envelope Show brings those memories back to life.”

Chinese therapy or baoding balls date back to the Ming dynasty (1358 to 1644). Before their invention, soldiers and the general public exercised their hands by rolling walnuts. Nowadays, most therapy balls are made of metal and usually hollow inside. When manipulated, they produce a calming chiming sound.
Rolling the balls in one’s hand is believed to activate different therapeutic pressure points in the palm, thereby increasing the flow of energy. It may also help relax joints, ease anxiety, and improve dexterity.
Newly arrived on our shelves are these high quality baoding balls in a variety of designs. Each one is full of meaning:
☯️ Yin and yang — Balance and harmony
🐲 Dragon and phoenix — Symbols of marital bliss that embody harmony
🦋 Butterflies — Love and freedom
❤️ Longevity character — Long life
🌺 Peony — Riches, royalty, and honor
A “plain” chrome design is also available for the minimalist in your life.
Each pair comes in an elegant ebony brocade box, making them a lovely gift. Wish someone a long and healthy life on their birthday. Give a moment of zen to the anxious friend. Help a loved one soothe aches and pains.
Here’s how to use the balls:
✨ For beginners: Start by holding the two balls in one hand and rolling them in circular motions so they rotate and touch, creating a pleasant chiming sound as they move.
✨ For advanced users: Practice keeping them apart, using your index finger to guide them, moving one ball from your thumb to your pinky and back, all while avoiding contact.
Check them out at our Soho store and. In the meantime, see the baoding balls in action 💞

A New York institution since 1971, built on welcoming neighbors, celebrating culture, and carrying stories across generations. From its beginnings as a friendship store to becoming a home for Asian American makers and goods, Pearl River Mart is proof that care, curiosity, and community stand the test of time ✨
Risa uses gaming to explore rage and how it’s processed, validated, and even ignored. Participants are invited to spin THE WHEEL OF RECKONING AND RAGE and answer revealing questions about rage. The UNRESOLVED RAGE GAME is inspired by tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. But instead of battling medieval monsters, players navigate challenges inspired by real-life instances of racist or sexist microaggressions.
UNRESOLVED opens in our Soho gallery Thursday, Nov. 13. Join us for the opening reception that night from 6 to 8 PM. Free to attend but registration is appreciated (link I’m bio).
A radical beginning.
A legacy built on community, culture, and care.
Since 1971, has been a beloved New York City destination, a place where culture and community come together. Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Chen, the store began as a small “friendship” store in Chinatown and has since become a symbol of Asian American creativity and connection.
For more than five decades, the Chens worked side by side, hand-selecting every item and welcoming generations of customers through their doors. Today, under the leadership of their daughter-in-law Joanne Kwong, Pearl River Mart continues to thrive as a family-run institution, evolving while staying true to its roots.
