I’ve been wanting to organize this course for a long time and create an opportunity for people who haven’t yet had close contact with Brazilian rhythms to gain a deeper understanding of them.
Throughout the course, we will explore the historical background of these rhythms, their rhythmic structures, claves, origins, cultural context, and many other essential elements that help shape the rich musical traditions of Brazil.
The course will be taught in English, held in person in Basel, and begins on September 2nd. Classes will take place every two weeks on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM.

It will be a pleasure to share this knowledge and experience with all of you.

Coco is a traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythm and dance from the Northeast of Brazil, especially from the state of Pernambuco, including cities such as Recife and Arcoverde in the semi-arid interior region (Sertão). It is a deeply rooted cultural expression that comes from collective work songs and community gatherings, shaped by African, Indigenous, and local Brazilian influences.
The group “Raízes de Arcoverde” is one of the most important references of this tradition, and the city of Arcoverde is often recognized as a strong center of coco culture in Pernambuco.
“Coco Raízes do Arco Verde” is an adaptation that I developed from this traditional rhythm, inspired by its strong pulse, its connection to the body, and its communal energy. The idea is to keep the essence of coco alive while bringing a personal artistic interpretation into a new musical context.
I hope everyone enjoys it and feels inspired to practice and explore this rhythm.
