“Milagros” literally mean “miracles”, they are primarily offered to a Saint to thank him or her answering someone’s prayer. What was once a purely religious object has evolved into a popular and decorative item in Mexico. However, the shapes have remained the same, as they are still tied to specific meanings—hearts, for example, are omnipresent, and represent the physical heart of Jesus as a symbol of his divine love for humanity.
.
Highlighting the artisanal significance is at the very heart of our project. Beyond simply reselling crafts, our main goal is for our customers to understand the original purpose of the objects—their uses and meanings within the communities that create them—because they are part of Mexico’s cultural heritage. This is especially important in the case of Mexican milagros, a craft that is now widely copied and mass-produced in countries like India and, more recently, Morocco.

Pajapan is an indigenous community located on the slopes of the San MartĂn Pajapan volcano, where more than 1,500 hectares of tropical jungle and cloud forest are to be found. In 2003, the “Agua y Monte” cooperative, made of seven Nahua carpenters, was born with a double objective: to find an alternative to improve the economic situation of families and to protect the jungle of the San MartĂn Pajapan volcano. Agua y Monte artisans make small objects using local cocuite wood (Gliricidia sepium), abundant and fast growing. The crafts are made manually, each piece is sanded until obtaining the desired shape and quality and the finish is done with beeswax, avoiding the use of varnishes and sealants. Because Agua y Monte is also committed to protecting the jungle of the San MartĂn Pajapan volcano, the wood is produced in a sustainable way through reforestation actions established by the members of the cooperative.

Frida Kahlo- 1926
.
« Frida Kahlo painted her Self-portrait with a velvet dress in 1926. This photo captures that artwork, but Frida painted the photo with oil, copying the painting. This self-portrait, influenced by the work of Parmigianino or Modigliani, is the first professional artwork of the artist. She painted it for her boyfriend then, Alejandro Gómez Arias, who broke up with her. She explained that the sea in the back is a symbol of life. »
