After a little dip and dive we (Costa, Bogesh and I) proceeded to burn about 35,000 calories by walking all over Zurich in pursuit of checking out Lenin’s house from his days in exile. He probably wouldn’t have liked the Ukrainian flag I saw hanging above his old window. Thought that was a fitting scene for 2026.
The show was great. Basement killed it and then we shoved back on to a new bus on route to the Netherlands for Jera on Air. Despite being exhausted, we stayed up kinda late talking HC with Joe from Pest Control and Big Cheese who’s doing crew for Basement. Then I blinked my eyes and it was 14 hours later and we were in the furnace that was Jera on Air.
We technically played ‘Baby I’ll Change’ for the first time to a small audience of fest goers during soundcheck but not during the set. I caught up with Freddy Madball and watched them destroy the Netherlands shortly before Nate from told me how Timmy Chunks told him to quit his job 30 years ago and to go on tour and he did. The second Nate was done with his story, Converge’s entrance music went on and they ripped everyone’s face off. I wonder if Timmy Chunks knows this story.
Lotta HC talk on bus en route to Paris that night. I’ve never been to Paris so playing was a big deal for me. The set was basically perfect as we were able to have our friends in sing ‘Heart to Heart’ with us. killed it after and so did Basement. I then proceeded to enjoy the night and the following day with the love of my life walking around what I think might be the greatest city on earth.

I’m going to parts of Europe I’ve never been to before, which is weird because at one point in my early 20’s I felt as if I lived in Europe forever. The words “European Tour” conjure pretty vivid memories for me.
This first photo here of me somewhere right outside the Ukrainian border in 2009 is from the one memory that stands out the most in my head. This was on the last tour for. My days of gallivanting across the historic beauties of Europe were coming to a close and I could feel it in my bones. I knew a slower and quieter existence awaited me once the band was through. Some days I felt like Odysseus on his final trek home. On other days the van felt more like a hearse.
The night before this photo was taken we spent hours at the Ukrainian border trying to pay off the guards to let us in. Our paperwork was fucked so we kept paying $500 every 2 hours from the middle of the night until about 5am. We eventually gave up and had to cancel what we were told was a sold out show with over 1,000 kids waiting to see us.
We slept in the van for a few hours and all I remember is waking up next to this field of sunflowers under a sky out of a Monet painting or something. I still think about that morning some times and can’t fully believe how beautiful life can look amid all its painful ways of existing.
When Have Heart reunited in 2019 and played in Wurzbürg, Germany, it felt like most of the kids we met were Ukrainian. I told them we owed them a show. I still believe we do & hope the good people of Ukraine and Russia can find some peace in the near future.
I don’t get to travel much outside of music, which is A-OK because I’ve come to love my slower, quieter existence with my beloved family and schoolteacher job. But while I’m here, I’m going to continue to appreciate my time on this European part of earth, treat it like it’s my last time, look for sunflower fields and buy more trinkets for the kids.

For example, 2nd & 3rd pics are from our (internally) famous trip to Crater Lake in Oregon in 2007(?). Have Heart had a day off between San Francisco and Portland. We wanted to go swimming. Some random guy told us to go to a place called “Crater Lake” and swim in it. We didn’t have smartphones and knew nothing more than what he told us. Took us 7 hours out of the way and into literal sheets of a snow top mountain (in July). We didn’t go swimming. Some people on the tour were pissed. I couldn’t have been more satisfied with life looking out at the beauty of it all.
Pic 4, 5 and 6 are from our epic 2008 tour with Ceremony and Blacklisted outside Boise, Idaho on the day Barack Obama was elected President. Everything felt stoic as we passed through endless dreamlike scenes of what felt like the potential of a new America we were unfamiliar with.
Pic 7 is the Brotherhood shot I need to recreate with my straight edge brother Shawn Costa or else I quit HC.
Last pic is the tour flier for the shows we have next month. Always grateful for the opportunity the world of punk & hc music has presented me. Fiddlehead will have new music by then and we can’t wait to play it and look out at the beauty along the way.

I got to sing my favorite set of lines I’ve ever written during ‘Calling Hours’ within two minutes of arriving before I was thrown into what felt like the blades of a lawnmower during CO’s classic, ‘Roll with the Punches.’
The Carry On set was legit perfect. I keep thinking about it. The dives were A+. Stage mosh was in full effect. Those guys really wrote the perfect hardcore setlist. probably had the best stage crowd killing. Saw the singer of X-up. Epic.
Getting out to shows I’m not playing is hard these days with two kids and a very full-time job on top of sporadically playing shows with - But I love how this HC thing creates opportunities for long drives with good 13 hour talks and run-in’s with the good people from ages ago that remind you of the strange and cool connective tissue of life.

We started going to shows in 1999 as the mid to late 90’s straight edge revival era was winding down.
From Floorpunch & Ten Yard Fight to In My Eyes & Right Brigade it was an awesome range but it was all goddamn gone by 2000. Outside of American Nightmare (who turned the scene upside down in a good way), Count Me Out (too far away and not as local to Massachusetts), I felt as if I had kinda missed a so-called golden age from 95-99.
But when the Teamwork 7” came out in late 2000(?), it felt like they took everything from No Justice to IME to FP & Right Brigade and compiled it into one massive new kind of grenade in the scene at the time.
When “A Life Less Plagued” came out on Bridge 9 Records I became transfixed and listened to it on repeat. The lyrics felt uniquely angry but hopeful and were equally matched by riffs and a coherence of song writing I didn’t think was possible. Every song on that record is a banger.
So, naturally, I was in utter turmoil when I missed their ONE show in Massachusetts because I didn’t have a fucking car ride there. But, the spirit I took from Carry On was that so-called “golden ages” that I thought I missed were bullshit and all that mattered was the present moment. Not some storied past. You get to have a say in what the present moment can be.
So the spirit of Have Heart was 100% born out of Carry On w/ the true HC spirit that they brought to the table. We were not subtle about the Carry On influence on us as the first actual second of ‘The Things We Carry’ makes that apparent.
When writing songs like “Unbreakable” we would often refer to what we called “The Todd Jones Flare” and I looked to the honesty and vulnerability of Ryan’s lyrics as a permission to do the same. Those guys have stayed with music and still continue to influence me in my journey with music.
All of this is to say that I am in debt to that band and I simply can’t wait to see them this weekend.
