This was actually part 1 of our Scandinavia trip - 2 nights at the peerless. The garden that surrounds the hotel is small but utterly lovely so we had every meal we could outside. Ate A LOT of breakfast 😬 - it’s the fresh air M’lud (and lunch & dinner now I think about it 🧐). The bath in photo 5 has effectively ruined every other bath for me 😞 though you did have to plan ahead regarding filling it as it took a while…All the colours and textures are SO GOOD. Even the hellebores at the entrance are the nicest I’ve ever seen. Ilse Crawford was a tutor of Eindhoven and is proper genius.
We’ve had a brilliant, rainy, very chilly few days in Lofoten in the very north of Norway. We looked up the weather in the WRONG PLACE when packing for our trip 😑 so had to buy QUITE A LOT OF CLOTHES on our arrival 😬. Now it looks like everything we own has the Norwegian flag on it. thinks he looks like a fisherman. I think we both look like tourists who went mad in the local gift shop. Fortunately we 💙 our Norwegian clothes and we ❤️ Lofoten. We stayed at and had the most delicious food and a cabin with the most incredible views. We went to the fishing museum at Å which blew our tiny minds. The fishermen slept OUTDOORS under their boats from January-April so now when anything is a tiny bit annoying we can say to each other ‘At least we aren’t sleeping under our fishing boats outdoors in January’🧐
We did a 4 hour hike up mountain with which at one point involved removing our shoes and socks to cross some water, hilarious and FREEZING. Flying back south to Oslo now where we won’t have to dress entirely in gear bearing the national flag 🇳🇴
My siblings and I (with a full complement of other halves) just spent a week in France working our tushies off to get Le Prieuré ready for summer rentals and weddings. Even at the best of times the house and garden are like the love child of the Aegean stables and the Forth bridge but this year we could add catastrophic flooding in the region into the mix of ‘things to deal with.’ Luckily we all get on really well and all have ants-in-our-pants so a week spent scrubbing, sanding, mopping, painting and ferrying now defunct white goods to the local dump seemed a perfectly pleasant proposition for a holiday. The garden which has had all the fertiliser from local fields washed over it has gone particularly nuts, you could practically see the grass growing before your eyes.
On the last evening, having spent a week with mad hair and in paint spattered clothes we all scrubbed up and went to our local (very chi-chi) restaurant. All that is except my brother in law Martin who was ‘too deep in’ and sat at the end of the table drinking margaritas with mad hair and a paint spattered face (clothes were clean TBF). It was a great week
Our Easter weekend was FANTASTIC. The whole family convened in London for the SUBLIME wedding of to at Tate Britain. It was an incredible celebration; joyful, glamorous, very, very stylish but most of all so much fun.
On Sunday we had Easter lunch with everyone at the flat. It was the first time we’ve entertained there as up until now we only had a garden table for 2 (took a looooong time to find the right table).
It was as everyone was arriving we realised we only had 5 forks and there were 11 of us 🤔 Matt went to tbe pound shop & bought 6 more he & I still had to share as one was trapped in our stupid dishwasher that CANNOT BE OPENED once it’s started going. We had lunch, followed by a baby disco, followed by an evening walk round Clerkenwell with Henry & Claire who were staying round the corner and on Monday we met up with Mary & Jonas to go to The National Gallery to see an exhibition and then had a great lunch at Dumplings Legend (it was true to its moniker) then to the National Portrait Gallery, then walked back home on the most beautiful, sunny afternoon to have tea and brown butter madeleines at the flat.
Round up of March; flat progress - we hung all the art, clocks etc.. how the bathroom tiles arrived 🫠 for the London flat, DB’s hair when you blow dry it and she’s lying on the bed, cooking, Suffolk garden coming to life, Easter window at the shop done by Mother’s Day card featuring DB by, things I haven’t shown are the work starting on the Norwich flat, summer clothing arriving at the shop, my current obsession with Geo guesser (trying to learn all the countries in the world), other obsession is the food shops in Walthamstow (see stories) the regular Turkish & Middle Eastern shops are incredible too, going to C.Atherley launch which was delightful, going to the Lucian Freud show, also to St John Passion at the cathedral and about eleventy billion trips between London & Norwich
It was SO snowy this Sunday having been really sunny on Saturday 🤯. Video 2 & 3 are the view from my bedroom and photo 4 was the weather the day before. Huge, fluffy snowflakes like feathers. It’s ridiculous how excited we got especially as it melted really quickly but we went for a walk while it lasted. Obviously snow is v picturesque but I LIKE winter. I don’t even mind dreary, muddy Jan, Feb, March in the countryside though that’s possibly because I’m either in Norwich or London a lot 😬. Veg garden pretty empty and tragic, now just some brassicas & a single celeriac 😞 but buying veg meaning it doesn’t need to be HOSED DOWN before it comes in the house does have its upside 👍🏼
Frosty January afternoon! We still have cavolo nero, cabbages, celeriac, sprouts, leeks (impossible to get out of the ground atm) and parsley. I absolutely love brassicas 💚
Lunch from a tragically empty fridge, overfilled freezer that I’m trying to make space in before Christmas (this has resulted in some very bizarre meals built round random ingredients I’m too mean to throw away ) plus a decent amount of garden herbs & veg; a pepper, cavolo nero, carrots, coriander & parsley
I had a brilliant birthday weekend in Amsterdam with. I absolutely LOVE Amsterdam, so, so beautiful (even in the POURING rain) so stylish, such great food with the most wonderful museums and galleries. We stayed which is in the coolest building 😎, ate at wonderful places I visited two of my favourite most inspirational shops and run by extremely chic, creative women. Went to a fantastic exhibition of 17th century life saw modern art at and photography we even went on a canal cruise.
I particularly love a grey, winter city break - considerably more than a summer Mediterranean trip, it’s I think the Flemish peasant in me that feels most at home eating potatoes in grey drizzle 🧐
Charlie, the electrician, hung our old lights from Myddelton Square in the new flat and they look so good! Flat is still a big mess (witness all the random boxes in the photo) as we’ve both been so busy we haven’t had time to move in properly but we are having more furniture, books etc.. delivered on Friday and this weekend we’ll stay in London to get it done 💪🏼 In the meantime and I are hotly debating whether or not to have blinds at the windows. My view is if people want to watch me make porridge in my giant Uniqlo pants they’re welcome and blinds will not quite ruin but not IMPROVE the lines of the window. He prefers to clip his toenails while watching Slow Horses unobserved. We already had a big argument about a painting which I won - it’s exhausting having a husband with interior design opinions…
Photo taken at 5.45 in the morning as our bedroom also has no blinds (which I DO want but only for light blocking purposes) as I can never sleep once it starts getting light 🫩
