Welcome to Weerribben-Wieden National Park, a hidden corner of the Netherlands 🇳🇱 where life moves a little slower. With its peaceful waterways, beautiful nature, and laid-back atmosphere, it feels like you've travelled much farther than you actually have.
Before visiting, I hadn't heard of it. Now I'm wondering why more people aren't talking about it.
is where an entire village disappeared beneath the water 💦, where otters 🦦 made their comeback, and where parts of the landscape actually float. What looks like untouched wilderness today was shaped by people over hundreds of years through peat digging before nature slowly took over again. And it did so successfully enough for otters to return (how much fun is this otter emoji?! 🦦)
Over two days, I discovered the national park and its surroundings. What stayed with me most wasn't one specific sight, but the feeling of slowing down.
Here are my tips for visiting:

🥾 Start your visit at Visitor Centre De Wieden, where you'll find two beautiful walking trails, the 2.3 km Laarzenpad and the 1.5 km Vlonderpad, plus educational activities, a nature playground, and a boat connection to beautiful Giethoorn
🍰 Stop by for heavenly homemade treats. Their lunch and dessert platters are worth the visit alone

🏘️ Visit Vollenhove, a former fishing and trading town. Wander through the historic centre, stroll through Park Oldruitenborgh, and look for the ruins of Toutenburg Castle

For us, Krujë (also called Kruja) was a spontaneous Plan B. But honestly, it deserves a spot on every Albania itinerary. And with it being just around the corner from Tirana, it’s the perfect day trip too.
Why you should visit:
Known as the “cradle of Albanian independence,” this mountain town is deeply tied to Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg, who resisted the Ottoman Empire for 25 years in the 15th century.
What to do 👀
Wander through the historic Krujë Castle 🏰 with the Skanderbeg Museum, stroll the centuries-old Old Bazaar of Krujë, explore traditional Albanian life inside the Ethnographic Museum of Krujë, and don’t miss the hidden Hajji Mustafa Baba Tekke tucked away within the castle grounds. Berat instantly feels like stepping into another era.
White Ottoman houses spill down the hillside, their countless windows glowing in the sun.
Your day in Berat:
Start your morning slow. A coffee ☕️ and fresh crêpes at Shtëpia e Kafes Gimi are the perfect introduction to the city’s laid-back charm before diving into its winding alleys.
While the air is still cool, 🥾 make your way up the zig-zag path to St. Michael's Church (best found on hiking apps as Komoot e.g.) and continue towards Berat Castle🏰, fortress with roots dating back to the 4th century BC. From up there, the views over the valley and the sea of white houses are fantastic. And if you're lucky, you spot a turtle on your way up 😍
Back in town, get lost wandering through Mangalem and Gorica, where cobblestone streets, stone bridges and hidden corners make the entire city feel like an open-air museum.
For lunch, go for comforting homemade Albanian food at Gimis House Hotel & Restaurant or escape into the dreamy garden setting of Lorenc Secret Garden Restaurant 🌿
Berat is one of those places that quietly steals your heart ❤️

I thought it would be nice… but this place is absolutely mind-blowing.
26 km long, up to 100 m deep and it keeps surprising you around every corner.
👀 Must-stops:
• Osumi Canyon Viewpoint: modern platform with panorama views and café
• Osumi Canyon Bridge: a rusty, cinematic crossing straight out of a movie
• Canyon access by Summer Bar Restorant: take the short hike to the old Zabërzan Bridge, go for a refreshing swim or have a drink or ice cream.
🚣 Must do:
Rafting through the canyon! The 2-hour tour with gives you a whole new perspective. Absolutely worth it.

🚗 Getting there:
- Driving there will take you about 1,5 hours from Berat. The road condition is good, although be prepared for lots of turns
- IMPORTANT: Right now, there is no way to continue by normal car southwards, e.g. in the direction of Përmet even though Google Maps says so. There is a 4x4 road, though.
- There are day tours from Berat if you don't want to drive yourself
It all began with a wild idea from a friend of mine who was living in Austria back then: driving all the way from Austria to Istanbul.
The second she told me, I was in - and somehow took on planning the entire adventure.
We never made it to Istanbul (at least not on that trip)… but what we did instead was even better: a 16-day road trip 🚗 through 10 Balkan countries in 2012.
With our friend's old VW Golf “Steve", a paper map, and a rough plan to follow UNESCO sites, we just drove. No fixed routes, no real expectations, just curiosity leading the way.
Getting lost? Happened all the time. But that’s exactly what led us to unexpected places and the warmest encounters with locals.
That journey changed everything. It was the beginning of my love for this region and a reason I’ve kept coming back ever since.
And now, I’m heading back again this week ❤️
