Murals by Juan O'Gorman in Casa Nancarrow. Designed for the musician and composer, Conlon Nancarrow, this house was one of the architect's first iterations in muralism. The house is located in Las Aguilas neighbourhood and was open for me art exhibit.

Remains of an Empire.
This was the most important ceremonial complex of Tenochtitlan. The main temple is crowned with two altars, dedicated to Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli. It was surrounded by smaller buildings which honored other gods, such as Ehecatl, as well as schools and ball courts.
Destroyed by orders of Cortés, who then decided to erect the new government and religious buildings in the same location as imposition and dominance.

Fuente de Tlaloc, fountain sculpture by Diego Rivera depicting the Mexica God for rain.
Inside the building designed by Ricardo Rivas in 1951, there is the mural "Agua origen de la vida" also by Diego Rivera
This place, Cárcamo de Dolores is a reservoir where 25% of the drinkable water arrives in the City, coming from a complex (and ridiculous) system of 13 dams pumping water upstream.
The water tanks are decorated in pre-Columbian motifs in volcanic stone.

Poliforum Mier y Pesado, built in 1944 as housing for elderly women. Designed by architect Juan Segura and donated by the Mier y Pesado foundation.
Nowadays it hosts a museum, a 10 key hotel and some retail.
Palacio de Hierro is one of many Mexican curiosities. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel, yes that same one, in an Art Nouveau style. The structure was fabricated in Europe and shipped over to Mexico. Finished in 1894, it currently hosts the local governance offices and a museum and a cafe.

Orizaba, a small city in the skirts of the eastern Sierra Madre mountain range. Its name derives from Ahuilzapan, from the Nahuatl "place of pleasing waters" due to the confluence of Rio Blanco and several other rivers that border the site.
It's been historically industrial. It was part of the train system that connected the east coast at the Gulf of Mexico, all the way to Mexico City.
Velasco painted some marvelous scenes of trains crossing through the mountainous landscape.

Beautiful architecture, density and walkability, tree planted streets, human scale. This is something we should try to achieve and want for our cities.
Ending with another Upper West Side classic.
