The ORI team have been making the most of the (very!) brief sunny spells last week and had Dolly out on trial again!🌞
Our robots are often out on trial across Oxford, any guesses where we may be next?! 🤔👇
It's a continual question to ask ourselves as we innovate, and Ryan Gariepy from Rockwell Automation had some great insights last week.
From R&D trends to fundraising strategy, Ryan discussed what it really takes to turn robotics research into lasting impact.
The key takeaway? Building robots that are impressive is good, but building systems that actually work, scale, and make a difference is better. 💪
Thanks for the food for thought, Ryan! 🙌

We took Frank and Spot to visit the brilliant pupils at Clanfield Church of England Primary School. 👏
Our researchers from the Applied Artificial Intelligence Lab, Goal-Oriented Long-lived Systems group and Parker Jones Neural Processing Lab were on hand to show what robots can do – and hopefully inspire a future generation of roboticists along the way. ✨🚀

Together, we’ll continue to scale autonomous robotics to improve nuclear safety and operations. Our robots have already been navigating, mapping, and detecting hotspots at nuclear sites across the UK. Now, we’ll be taking this learning to the international level to refine and accelerate the deployment of autonomous inspection and digital technologies for demanding, real-world environments. 🗺️⚛️

Turns out… a lot. 💡
We recently hosted Professor Kaushik Jayaram for our latest ORIentate seminar, where he shared how his bioengineering group is studying the way insects and spiders navigate cluttered, challenging terrain. The group is working to overcome the adaptability-agility trade-offs which limit the performance of traditional soft robots. 🧭 🆙
Tests from their insect-scale, origami-based quadrupedal robot are promising – Prof. Jayaram shared findings relating to gait design, control, and motion planning for agile locomotion. He also presented a geometric motion planning framework for autonomous, closed kinematic chain articulated systems that is computationally effective and has a promising potential for onboard and real-time gait generation.
Thanks for sharing your learnings with us, and we’re looking forward to seeing how this research develops! 👾 🤩

Behind every robot and innovation in robotic systems is an incredible lab, so today offers a great opportunity to spotlight the specialised spaces and talented teams that make our work possible. 🔍
🦇 Our main research "bat lab" has just been expanded, meaning more space, more experiments and more robotics.
👋The Soft Robotics Lab has its own dedicated space for manufacturing and pushing the boundaries of what robots can feel and do.
🎓Linked with our new MSc in Autonomous Robotics, students on the course will benefit from their own lab space to get hands-on training with the latest autonomous systems.
🛠️ And none of it would happen without our amazing research engineers – none of our innovations would be possible without them. Here's to the labs and the people in them. 🙌
