I've been turning some lovely salted beech on the pole lathe today. Look at those sweet shavings 😍😍
I'm working through some of my final bits of beech from a massive tree that our landlord cut down. It's starting to get a bit dry on the ends so I had a bit of a mission to turn it all into blanks before it split. The bit I cut into today had some surprise pretty patterns! A lovely treat!
Join us for Pole Lathe End Grain Cup Turning and spend the day working at the lathe with, learning how to shape, hollow and refine your own wooden cup using traditional tools and techniques. You’ll come away with a finished piece and a deeper understanding of the material and process.

This is one of two courses running over weekend with Owen - a master craftsperson with a wealth of knowledge to share. He’ll also be teaching a Spoon Carving for Improvers course on the 30th May. f you can, why not make a weekend of it and book onto both? It’s a rare chance to really immerse yourself and learn side-by-side with an expert.

You’ll cover:

🥄How to select and prepare suitable wood
🥄Efficient axe work to prepare a spoon blank
🥄Techniques to speed up your process
🥄Improved carving techniques
🥄Finishing techniques

You’ll leave with a finished spoon (or two), and a stronger sense of your own carving process to carry forward.

I've still got a couple of these new Crannog bowls waiting for a new home.
I have really appreciated all of the support from this most recent treen drop. The world isn't an easy place at the moment and I truly am grateful that some of you want to hand over your hard earned in exchange for my work.
🖤
New work NOW AVAILABLE! You know where to go ⬆️
Thank you to all my mailing list folks who have a headstart on the goodies. I really appreciate all the support.
There is still a lot of treen up for grabs, including a couple of these Coppergate cups.
🖤
More new stuff. Do you like them?
These are some new versions of the straight edge coffee mug that I have made in the past.
I designed these to look a bit more modern than most wooden mugs that are about. The straight lines and low handle give it a more contemporary feeling.
I have carved these with a neolithic pattern, found on a pottery shard from windmill hill, Wiltshire.
Can't be too modern after all 😉
Boxes are always the best with locking lids. Do you agree?
I often get asked what my favourite thing to turn is and I'm pretty sure I can hand on heart say it is these boxes.
Fiddly but fun! And useful! And cool! And awesome!
More new work! What do you think?
A medium sized locking lid box with an ebonised finish and a spooky mend on a loose knot. When I initially turned this box, the knot appeared to be sound but, as usual, the wood kept me humble and loosened during drying. Rather than waste my labour, I drilled the knot out and replaced it with a hand carved skull and epoxy mend. I usually strive to use sound wood for my work but nature makes fools of us all 😂
Finished off these Coppergate cups. What do you think?
I really love these, especially the little bead. It feels so nice when you hold it, plus you can drink like a real viking rather than posing with a horn 😉
What do you think of these?
I had a little photoshoot in the workshop for some of my recent work, ready for an upload soon.
These Crannog bowls are a particular favourite from this batch. Over the years, I have turned many different styles of bowl but it is always nice to try something different.
I think the pole lathe tool marks really lend themselves to the form of these ancient shapes.
