비둘기가 있(었)다. 이제는 없다. 누구도 비둘기를 사랑한다고 말하지 않는다. 작가는 그들을 미워하지 마라, 라고 말한다. 이 말이 그들을 사랑하라는 뜻은 아니다. 작가는 그들을 치장하지 않고, 있는 그대로를 보여준다. 거기에는 어떤 아름다움도 휘황도 없다. 작가가 발굴하는 것은 아름다움이나 메시지가 아니라 쫓겨난 자리를 보고 나서 마주하게 되는 마음이다. 그들을 그대로 받아들이지 않겠다는 마음. 고대 청동 거울로 비추듯이 검은 오브제를 통해, 우리의 마음을 반사한다.

검거나 뾰족한 것, 검고 뾰족한 정물을 마주하고 나서 이 글을 시작한다. '미워하지 않기'를 대리 수행하기 위해 이 글을 쓴다. 검고, 검은, 검음을 본다. 작가는 어둠을 보여주는 방식 대신에 검은 자리를 제공한다. 검은 자리에서 ‘무엇’이 추방되었는지 생각하게 만든다. 검은 종이에 검은 글씨 쓰는 놀이를 하는 이, 어둠 속에서 검은 나무의 윤곽을 끝까지 응시하는 이처럼. 검은 자리가 그저 부재함을 뜻하는 것이 아니라 무엇이 있었던 자리임을 상기시킨다.
