The platypus can deliver a sting described as one of the most painful in the animal kingdom. On a males hind legs are venomous spurs, while they are not typically aggressive toward humans, if stung, the pain is excruciating, immediate and severe.
The pain can evolve into a long lasting sensitivity (hyperalgesia) that can persist for months, sometimes resulting in muscle wasting in the affected limb 🦵.
These fascinating creatures mostly live in solitude and are quite shy, with almost 40,000 electroreceptors in their bill, they are very very sensitive to vibrations and sounds, if you ever encounter these incredible animals in the wild, keep movements and sound to an absolute minimum and enjoy every second of it.
