This is Gwennie drumming without any practice or training at all! đŸ€Ż There is no doubt she has a gift! Josh drummed when he was younger and when we got space for him to have a drum set, he brought it in, and what we have seen from Gwen has been nothing short of extraordinary. She truly has a natural talent for drumming and we are so excited to continue exploring this with her. For a little tiny girl that is the size of a three year-old (even though she’s actually seven years old!!!) to be able to have this coordination with drumsticks where she can operate them independently, and then the best part - ending with a glorious crash of the cymbal - is just inspired. 💛 Gwen of course has Down syndrome and she’s vulnerable healthwise because she’s been through five open-heart surgeries in the past seven years. Physically she has some growth & recovering still to do but her spirit is so amazing! There is much still to be uncovered. She is a gift, and we are so excited for her and for what is to come now that her heart is finally healthy! 👏👏👏
If you happened to see the last video I posted, it was explaining how in the middle of heart failure and being the sickest her little body has ever been, Gwen overcame her fear of swinging. đŸ„° Several times before her last heart surgery in January she was able to go to the park in Boston, even in the freezing temperatures, and just giggle & giggle and SWING. Watching her bright red hair shimmering in the sunlight in front of the church, hearing her giggle and seeing how much fun Rowan and Gwen are having swinging with each other for one of the first times ever
it’s just a beautiful scene!

It was a wonderful way for us to keep our spirits up between days in the hospital, and it was delightful that of ALL the times in Gwen‘s life and in ALL of her seven years that THIS was when she decided her bravery would happen. This was when she would learn to love swinging!

This was one of our favorite parks in Boston because it was right next to a beautiful church. Rowan would always get so excited when she would find out that we were going to the “church park”. Our girls loved to listen to the Church bells ring, you can hear them at the beginning of this video. Another cool thing is that from a lot of Gwen‘s hospital rooms we would be able to look out and see this church steeple. 💛💒

I just wanted to share this video because you look back on those difficult days and it’s amazing to see such beautiful moments like this. Now that the dust has settled I am hoping to share more of these small moments of our time in Boston.

Gwen‘s “Moment of Triumph”. It didn’t happen like I thought it might - perhaps weeks or months after finally having a repaired heart. It didn’t happen when things were perfect. Instead, I realized it happened when Gwen‘s heart was still broken!

These photos were taken this January in Boston. Gwen was briefly out of the hospital while waiting for surgery, but she was deeper into heart failure than she’d ever been. It was freezing and she did not feel well but we went to the park and CAN YOU IMAGINE - for the first time in ALL of her seven years, Gwen marched right up to the swing and SHE SWUNG. After being terrified of swinging her whole life, Gwen chose THIS time when her body was physically at its lowest point to do something brave. I will always remember this experience as her true moment of triumph!

We don’t have to wait for things to be perfect to live our lives. Things might not ever be perfect, and we can still grow and thrive in spite of it all. I just thought wow
watching Gwen overcome that fear. ❀ Why then? We don’t know, but I do believe her little spirit decided that it didn’t need to wait any longer. It was time to soar. 💓 And, it did.

Three months after heart surgery, three months after her first brave swing, she is continuing to triumph and we are so proud of her! Seeing Rowan sitting alongside her on the swings, well, my heart was just bursting! 💛💛💛

It’s now been two months since Gwen got her artificial valve and we came home from Boston. We all needed time to come back to ourselves and get used to life again. Now that I can see it more clearly it’s crazy how hard it’s been, hard not for days but for YEARS
but the dust has finally settled! We have been quiet because we (okay, probably mostly ME đŸ€Ș) needed a minute to breathe and just to figure out how we feel right now. Are we OK? Are we fine? Are things going well? Gwen needed time to heal after going through two heart surgeries in the last nine months
both clear across the country and away from home. Then we came home and moved to a new house and that is all just a lot of change, and some trauma too.

But WE ARE DOING GREAT! Gwen’s heart is in great shape, solid, and her energy and development are really taking off. I personally feel almost fully back to myself and ready to see what comes next! It is so perfect for this to coincide with springtime

We celebrated World Down Syndrome Day this past weekend and it was the first time in seven years that it wasn’t overshadowed by Gwen’s health. When health is struggling, it’s hard to even think about anything else. Seeing Gwen right now in this period of recovery, repair & growth allows us to more fully celebrate everything else about her! It has taken a lot of time, but she is really coming to life. Good health is truly everything and we are so fortunate that her heart is finally working right!

We recently took Gwen & Rowan to Disney on Ice and after it was over, two young in their twenties stopped to talk to us. They both had Down syndrome and they were just drawn to Gwen. They were so excited to meet her and talk to us, and were just so incredibly sweet. With everything we’ve gone through, Gwen is definitely more behind in every way than even a typical child with Down syndrome, but when I see thriving adults like those two young women, I just know that Gwen is going to be there someday. I know that we’ll be able to have conversations with her, and have the relationship with her that these sweet women have with their family. I just love that they recognize Down syndrome and are drawn to each other because of it. It really is a gift and I wouldn’t have known about it without Gwen! 💛

The girl who has not been feeling well for years on end, the girl who has had more hospitalizations & more setbacks & more struggles
that girl is finally getting a break. We are seeing Gwen! She is recovering! And each day we see her become better able to communicate and have more interest in the world around her. She’s still gaining back strength, but has been able to walk around and explore her surroundings in a way she hasn’t been able to do before. We can see that every part of her body physically & mentally has been freed to operate more like a typical healthy person.

Even just tolerating her environment has improved!! We took the girls to Disney on ice recently, and typically Gwen would have trouble sitting through a performance with loud music and lights and it’s not SENSORY for her like you would think but more just that when you don’t feel well, NONE of that is fun! It is not tolerable! But this last time Gwen enjoyed every second of it!! It wasn’t too much or too loud and it’s because she just simply felt GOOD!! Her body felt good. 💛

It’s so hard to express how much of her life she has spent feeling crummy in one way or the other, and you just can’t show up to life when you feel crummy. You just can’t! So I just wanted to share our excitement at the path Gwen is on because it is one she is truly deserving of, and we can’t wait to see more!

Gwen before her most recent cardiology appointment. 💛 This is probably the most clearly we’ve been able to see her overall health outlook in, well, her ENTIRE life! Gwen is four weeks out from heart surgery but we can FINALLY see progression. There is good, but also still some bad and I think here in the middle is where she is going to settle out.

Gwen has an artificial valve now but if you think about how an artificial hip or knee or other body part operates, it’s just never as good as the real thing. Unfortunately, that’s just reality. We are unbelievably lucky to have these medical advantages, but Gwen‘s artificial valve is no different. Her valve will never operate as efficiently as that of a healthy original valve, or even as well as her transplanted valve could have, had it worked out.

That being said, Gwen’s heart is looking good. It’s still under stress, but time will help it continue to grow stronger. And her valve is working as well as it can and we are not worried about it! We think she can go years now without any kind of intervention. But because this valve is not perfect just by design, we will face more hospitalizations as Gwen experiences different challenges related to illness.

⭐⭐But overall, I can tell you that we have finally EXHALED. We’ve learned that there will never be an end to hard things and we are OK with that. We will continue to lift our “hard”weights and gain strength, and that’s what’s important. 💛đŸ’Ș

Next week things might change but this week Gwen’s fevers have consistently gone down a solid notch and we are ready to see what additional improvement each coming week holds!

Yes. That is us, taking it slow. So happy to be done with heart surgery, but still not able to fully relax. But in the past few days we’ve noticed a shift in Gwen. Fevers have lessened - they just keep popping back up so they never really went away. But they have lessened and her energy continues to get stronger. It’s not perfect, but it’s enough for us to feel super hopeful that her body is finally recovering from all that it’s gone through. And it’s gone through a lot! We are trying to catch up on life because it’s essentially been on hold since mid-December when Gwen was hospitalized and we then left for Boston. Moving to a new house during all of that, while we weren’t even in the state was tough, and the amount of change and stress our family has gone through over the past few months really does seem unbelievable. BUT we have some beautiful sunsets from our new home and I can tell you that every single day we look at them. We are so grateful to be together and not separated in different cities and hospitals and hotel rooms. We don’t need perfection, we just need to be together. The path Gwen is on is looking super hopeful! She has an echocardiogram tomorrow just to make sure everything‘s OK with her new mechanical valve and we are confident she’s going to keep improving. We can’t wait to see her blossom!

It can be hard to post updates because we’ll feel like Gwen is home to stay and then that same day she will be back in the hospital. But this time, still allowing for life to happen, we really feel like she’s going to be home for a while! Her fevers are getting noticeably better each day, and while her energy goes up and down, it seems like it’s trending up. Her little body has been through so much, two heart surgeries in the last year, five days intubated, and then in and out of the hospital constantly over the past two months. So I think it’s OK her to take her time healing!

Life has been a whirlwind for us because when you’re dealing with the hospital, it’s so hard to take care of things at home, and when we were in Boston, that was even harder to deal with our life back home! But I’m hoping to get some more updates as soon as we can get settled a little more!

What better time for an update on Gwen than when she is having so much fun? 😆 We have gone through every scenario possible with her fevers and we have one more scan tomorrow (she will be sedated for it) before we can get clearance to go home. So far things are looking good that she does NOT have an infection on her heart but tomorrow will fully rule that out one way or the other. She has been checked for everything under the sun. Our best guess at this point is that because she was on immunosuppressants, and then came off of them (which very rarely happens) that perhaps her body is overreacting to the diuretics she has to take. All we know is she is doing well despite the fevers, we are hoping to go home from the hospital in a couple days, and then hopefully just more TIME and PATIENCE and Gwen’s sweet kicks 💃 will resolve everything else!

Thanks to nanny for this cute video and basically giving up her life right now for Gwen. SAM IS AMAZING and the bond she has with Gwen is everything. 💛
