One thing we already seriously worked on is a fruit forest behind the garden: we have about 30 fruit trees surrounded by herbs and flowers to attract pollinators. It does require quite a bit of water, especially in the first years. But I think it will be so amazing to be able to harvest so many things directly behind the house.
We have one empty spot on our land, with no trees. We actually bought most of the land before the ruins. The idea was to build a house in that spot. But now we pushed this idea to the future, maybe 10-15 years from now if everything works well. We are allowed to build a small house.
We started already planting parts of the land with hedges. Our idea is to not invest in nice fencing but instead to just completely cover them with plants, including fruits (a lot of pomegranate), flowers and more aromatic herbs.
I keep imagining a romantic picnic spot in the olive grove. And also a bench in the fruit garden. Places to sit and watch the nature and views.
This is our main entrance. For now just soil. But we want to make it a beautiful gravel road, surrounded by the olive trees and other plants. With some little lights at night to guide you in.
We started to plant cactus in areas where the land is quite steep and difficult to access. We think that we won’t need more fencing there.
We have planted 40 baby olive trees in the last 2 years and still plan to add a few. And we are thinking to take this plot as more of an experiment, planting tall trees like cypress with the olive trees and, and also some aromatic herbs. I just read an article that said that having aromatic herbs and different plants near olive trees could perfume the oil and increase the polyphenols. The taller trees may provide some light shade, that could be beneficial as it keeps getting hotter and drier. Still do be tested but I am really excited about the prospect.
We finally are thinking to build a path around the grove. Now
