It’s birthday week! 🎈

I’m still in a bit of disbelief over the fact that Avery will be F I V E on Saturday!

Sometimes it doesn’t seem as though it’s been that long, and others days it’s the opposite.

Plus, tomorrow is her 4th ReBirthday. Honestly, that day is the one I spend thinking about Gavin and his selfless act of donating his stem cells so Avery could live.

(He truly is the greatest, y’all. So very kind, smart, and fun.) 💛

Quick speech update:

This photo was taken at the zoo today. It was the first habitat we could talk her out of the wagon to look at.

I held her as we watched the elephants move around. I would point and repeat, “elephant.”

I know she can say the word. It’s one of my favorites that she says. It comes out more “elepant” (hard p rather than the ph sound.)

After a few times repeating this, she finally began to smile and said 🐘

We continued watching as the elephants made their way to the water near us. One of them stopped to eat, to which Avery said, “Elephant. Eat.”

Backstory, she was originally diagnosed as a Gestalt Language Processor, Level 1.

Recently, she has begun changing a few words in her songs to be more relevant in context to what she’s doing.

For example, as she plays with a duck, she sings, “the duck came down,” to the tune of “Hickory Dickory Dock.”

That’s Level 2. Changing the words a bit and mixing in other ones.

So, today’s 2-word phrase would be considered Level 3. Taking two words from her various gestalts (phrases she’s learned from songs) and putting them together.

Elephant. Eat.

It’s a complete thought that she wanted to convey, and she did it so well! 🥹

She was also consistent in using her sign for “done” to tell me when she was ready to move on.

At home, she will tell us, ”eat” sometimes when she’s hungry. She has told Papa to “stop” when they were playing and he was tickling her.

Today, she was sitting on a window sill at a restaurant and we were leaving, so I walked over to get her and she pushed me and said, “Go.”

It’s always such a joy to hear her speak her own words, rather than singing her gestalts.

All that to say, she’s doing well at therapy! I’ll share more tomorrow. #oureveravery
31 years. 40 countries. 44 states. 5 kids. 2 grandkids. ❤️

Together, we’ve racked up miles, memories, and even a few wrinkles.

And we wouldn’t trade one minute of it.

From passport stamps to souvenir shops, jet lag to city tours, we’ve been co-pilots through (most of) it. 😉

So, this isn’t just another anniversary — it’s one more checkmark on the “adventure of us.”

Here’s to the next leg of the trip!

We’ll be ready with bags packed, our itinerary in hand, and the map wide open for the next adventure. 🗺️

I know, I know. It’s been a minute. 🫣

I posted a quick story this weekend and y’all filled my inbox!

I can assure you that Avery is THRIVING!

She’s growing so fast! Speech therapy is going so well for her! And she’s still eating fries. 🍟

But, we’ve slowly been able to add a few more things too, which has been very encouraging.

She’ll celebrate her 4th ReBirthday on 10/15 and then her 5th birthday just three days later! 🎈

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that she is turning FIVE!

Anyways, that’s my quick update for today. I’ll try to share more soon, because she honestly has a lot going on right now.

She’s really taken off in the last 3 months!

Thanks for always cheering on our sweet girl. 💛

(Love, Ma 👵🏼)

Did you know that our bodies store trauma? Your brain and nervous system can replay the emotions of the day almost exactly as they were.

It started for me last night. A migraine. Nausea. Severe body aches. This morning I could barely walk.

Why? Because 8 years ago today, my world changed forever when we lost my mom.💔

They say “time heals”—but I’ve learned that isn’t quite true.

Time doesn’t erase the pain of losing someone you love so deeply.

It doesn’t make the ache go away.

What time does is teach you how to carry it.

Some days the weight feels lighter… other days—like today—it feels just as heavy as it did the moment it happened.

Grief isn’t something you “get over.” It’s something you learn to live with.

It changes you.

And I believe that’s because love never goes away. ❤️

So today, I’m giving myself permission to feel it all.

The sadness. The longing. The gratitude for having had her as my mom.

Because if the ache is proof of love, then I’ll carry it always.❤️‍🩹

She started her fight before she could sit up.

Now she jumps, runs, laughs, and lives with joy.

From the ICU to the trampoline — our miracle girl is 4 years cancer-free today.

She’s still got one more year until the doctors call it “cured,” but to us, she’s already a hero. 🦸🏼‍♀️

We love you, Avery. Every step, every smile.

What a journey, sweet girl. ❤️

Today we met Peppa Pig’s sister—Evie! 🐷💖

invited us for a day of fun, and we couldn’t say YES fast enough!

After hugs and high-fives with Evie, we rode some rides, sipped on the yummiest Muddy Puddle Milkshake, and cooled off in the Muddy Puddles Splash Day—much needed in this Texas heat! ☀️💦

Thanks for the adventure, #PeppaPigThemeParkDFW! We can’t wait to come back!

I know. I know. Long time no see. It’s been almost 6 weeks! 🫣

I’ll begin by saying that Avery is doing amazing!!

You can see here that she is getting so big. And her hair is growing long.

She’s still only drinking her from her bottle. And only formula. BUT, she’s actually doing better in feeding therapy.

We’ve been able to get other foods/drinking spouts near her mouth, which is a big step!

Even more exciting, last week after we left therapy we stopped by CFA and grabbed some waffle fries.

I asked, as we always do, if she wanted a fry and she put her hand out.

So, I handed it to her and she slowly began taking small bites!! 😱

I immediately sent video and pictures to her SLP and we all celebrated together. This was HUGE!

We also celebrated during her session that day because Avery intentionally pushed her first button on her AAC device! “GO!”

Her SLP modeled the word for about 10 minutes, and Avery was able to use it to tell her SLP to throw the ball. ☺️

Oh, yeah. Avery was given the AAC device 2 weeks ago. Today was the first day she picked it up and just pushed buttons for over 30 minutes.

She’s learning. It’s a(nother)slow and steady process.

Otherwise, Avi is singing almost every word of her songs. In both English and French!

She discovered French nursery rhymes and, sure enough, picked up the language. Her SLP isn’t sure what to think about that part.😂

She has begun to show interest in potty training, so we work on that at her pace.

Her therapist reminds us that we will just continue to “meet her where she’s at.” So that’s what we’re doing.

Now I’ll end with apologizing for taking the long break. Mentally I was not doing okay. (Reminder: (grand)Ma here) 👵🏼

I have Major Depression Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and General Anxiety Disorder. All 3 have collided over the past 2 months and it’s been a long climb back up.

My doctor doubled my meds 2 weeks ago and added a new one. I think we’re finally getting back to some sort of baseline.

All that to say, thank you all for sticking around. I do hope to post a bit more regularly. 💛

☺️105 DAYS LATER☺️

It wasn’t easy pulling off this surprise, but we did our best.

It was an incredibly long day of delays. Waiting. Uncertainty.

But, just before 6pm, the discharge papers were signed and Avery was on her way home!

Getting 3 teenagers to help “clean, play, and organize” their room before bringing Avery home was a challenge…

But we did it!

Everything was worth it when we saw their expressions and watching Riley R U N 🏃🏻‍♀️ to give her baby sister a big hug (in part 1).

✨You can see the first part of the homecoming video on ✨

Thank you for everyone who has supported Avery’s journey.

The past 3 months have been challenging and we’re just so glad to have her home!

✨I’M FEELING 2022✨

About this time in 2020, we were thinking about how excited we were to jump into 2021.

New year, New beginnings after a crazy pandemic year.

And then, on 12/16/20, we received ’s Leukemia diagnosis.

Everything we had hoped and wished for 2021 to be was gone.

This year has been up a roller coaster of trails and triumphs as we got Avery into remission in January…

were heartbroken by her relapse in April…

encouraged by CAR-T later that month…

celebrated her remission status again in August…

and rejoiced for her “rebirth day” (bone marrow transplant) on October 15th.

We’ve had so many ups and downs over the past 56 days, and our greatest wish for 2022 is to bring her home, healthy and cancer free.

We can’t wait to see Avery and Big Sister dancing through 2022 TOGETHER.💛

🪨 LOOK AT THESE ROCKS 🪨

I know, if you know me personally, I never say bad words… but this audio is perfect! 😂

This little girl is so very inquisitive. She’s curious about everything and loves to explore nature.

We take lap after lap of the small green area near our home.

She always asks to go “just one more time.”☝🏼

There’s no way I can say no to her sweet request when I know she just wants to see more.

We’ve started carrying a bag for her… ummm… “erections.”😂

It took me a minute to figure out she was saying, “COLLECTIONS.”

Big difference.

Anyways, we collect every “cool” rock, pretty leaf 🍁, perfect branch, and occasional bug along the way.

Sometimes we stop in a carefully selected (by her) area to pull some items from the bag to build a beanstalk.

We check the next day to see if it’s grown. She even has a plan for when it sprouts:

🌱Aunt 1: climb the beanstalk
🌱Aunt 2: gather food at the top
🌱Aunt 3: laugh 😂

I LOVE her imagination, creativity, and curiosity.

She’s so smart and just soaks everything in so quickly.

This is definitely one of my favorite ages.

What fun stage is your child in?
