The collegiate engineering competition tasks 11 teams from across North America to design and build an advanced battery pack for the commercial Ram ProMaster EV platform. Managed by Argonne National Laboratory and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Stellantis, the Battery Workforce Challenge provides students with hands-on experience in battery design, validation, safety, build and vehicle integration. Teams gathered in Detroit recently for final evaluations.

Computer science and engineering majors Henry Trowbridge and Ryan Schley and engineering physics major Ian Zalcberg won the Commander’s Cup for the overall best research, as well as the Analyst Award for the best paper in the Analyst Group and the Best Student Poster Expo Award.
They were advised by CDME Director of Industrial Cybersecurity Vimal Buck, CDME Associate Engineer Srikar Maduposu and Computer Science and Engineering Assistant Prof. Carter Yagemann. They were supported by Institute for Cybersecurity and Digital Trust Executive Director Julia Armstrong. Master Sergeant Natasha Phan of the U.S. Air Force served as the team’s Cyber Command Mentor.
Ohio State fielded 3 of the 28 teams from 19 schools that participated this year. Student teammates included undergrads Margaret Foster, Meghana Boda, Camden Burgess and Keshav Fernando, and PhD students Abdullah Yasin Etcibaşı and Zachary Dobos.
