May is Speech and Hearing Month.

"Given my clinical training as a Speech-Language Pathologist, I have always been passionate about advancing dignity, safety and quality care at the kitchen table.

For the past year and a half, the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) has been successfully implemented across Osler. This globally standardized, evidence-based initiative strengthens dysphagia care by helping patients eat and drink safely while reducing the risk of adverse events including aspiration pneumonia.

I am incredibly proud to have co-led this multi-site initiative alongside so many dedicated colleagues in every stage of this years-long journey. The success of this work reflects the strength of our interprofessional approach, with contributions from speech-language pathologists, dieticians, food services representatives, physicians, nurses, clerical associates, leaders and partners across Seniors Health, Quality & Patient Safety, Information Services, Strategic Communications, Professional Practice and many others.

Together, through ongoing training, food testing, team huddles and resource development, we established greater clarity and consistency in how modified food textures and liquids are prepared across Osler. This work has directly influenced the meals served at Osler’s hospital sites for patients who require modified diet recommendations following clinical swallowing assessments. It has also strengthened our ability to support patients and families in preparing familiar and culturally meaningful foods safely and confidently beyond the walls of Osler.

Eating represents more than nutrition. It’s connected to dignity, culture, safety and so much more. Bringing this work to life is a moment that will stay with me. I am proud of the lasting impact this initiative will continue to have for our patients, families and teams for years to come.”

- Jaspal Brar, Clinical Services Manager for Seniors Health

This pioneering initiative is transforming how we prepare the next generation of nurses—while also enriching the experience of our current teams. By investing in both today’s nurses and tomorrow’s, the APP strengthens our health care workforce, enhances patient care, and helps make Osler a workplace of choice.

May 3–9 is Hospice Palliative Care Week.

"My main role is to support inpatient care at Etobicoke General as a nurse practitioner. I provide care for patients requiring symptom management, and end-of-life care in hospital and outpatient care settings. I also provide education to my colleagues surrounding advance care planning and serious illness conversations.

Our unique palliative care model is dependent on the entire, multi-disciplinary team to ensure patients’ symptoms are managed and their goals of care can be supported. This includes palliative care physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, personal support workers, allied health team, pharmacists, clerical associates, speech language pathologists, dieticians, social workers, spiritual care and Transitional Care coordinators. Not to mention our environmental staff, our community partners from Ontario Health at Home, hospice partners and our managers who help to ensure patients can be discharged to their preferred location for symptom management and care which can include end of life care.

There is a misconception that palliative care is just about end-of-life care. It’s so much more than that - it is about supporting life and living, symptom management and quality of life, both in hospital and at home. When palliative care is introduced early, patients and families can have better outcomes around quality of life."

- Martha McKelvey, NP, Palliative Care
May 5 is International Day of the Midwife. At Osler, we have three midwifery groups who support birthing parents and their families at Brampton Civic and Etobicoke General.

💜 Hanan Gizaw, AMMA Midwives
“We call it continuity of care but it’s more than that. You get to witness the transformation of a person who is anxious, nervous about their pregnancy, labour and birth to parenthood. Meeting them in their private and personal space and insuring you give the best care possible for best outcome. Accompanying them through that journey is a privilege.”

💜 Shâdé Chatrath, Osler Midwifery Division Head, West End Midwives
“Being a midwife is not only about caring for individuals and catching babies — it encompasses being a leader, being innovative, compassionate, and advocating for those who need to be heard, It’s also about celebrating new life and supporting those who may experience loss. I love watching individuals find their inner strength and learning to love and believe in themselves and their bodies in a world where doubt and judgement is prevalent. I love being an advocator for anti-discrimination, anti-racism and social justice to ensure everyone gets equitable access to care.”

💜 Nikki Eskandari, AMMA Midwives
"It is a profound honour to be part of one of the most powerful, vulnerable, and courageous moments in life, like birth, and to help develop trust in this wonderful experience. Empowering families, the ability to provide high-quality care, and witnessing parents experiencing joy and tears of meeting their baby in the very first moment, is the most rewarding part."

💜 Adriana Rodriguez, West End Midwives
"I have been a midwife for many years, and what continues to motivate me is the honest gratitude of the families we care for. When clients return to us for their next pregnancy, again and again, it feels like becoming part of their family. That sense of connection is deeply meaningful.
I strongly believe that a positive birth experience is essential—it lays the foundation for confident parenting and allows families to truly enjoy the beginning of this new chapter in their lives."
