Musubi (結び): Tottori–Gothenburg Craft Exchange Project is a collaboration between six artists based in Sweden who, in February 2025, spent three winter weeks in Tottori Prefecture, Japan. Travelling through snow-covered valleys, coastal landscapes, and mountain towns, they visited local artisans in their homes and workshops.
Tottori is a region where craft traditions are deeply rooted, passed down through generations and shaped by local materials and ways of life. The project was initiated to explore how contemporary artistic practices in Sweden might enter into dialogue with these traditions.

The Japanese term musubi (結び) can be translated as “interconnectedness” or “bringing together.” It refers to the bonds and relationships that emerge through encounters, exchange and shared acts of making.

This exhibition presents works developed during and after the residency. First shown in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2025, it brings together artistic responses shaped by the time spent in Tottori. The exhibition at MUJI Small Gallery includes newly added works. Through disciplines such as wood, textiles, metal, ceramics, paper, and photography, the artists reflect on the ways traditions, materials, and experiences are carried across cultures and reimagined through dialogue.

Participated artists: Esbjörn Grip, Klara Lord, Sara Wallstedt, Shogo Hirata, Sebastian Kok och Sofie Karlsson.

The exhibition is supported by Oshinsha LLC (Japan) and travel grant from the Swedish Arts Council
New Arrivals from Hariko-ya Hanjiro✨

We are thrilled to introduce three new handcrafted treasures to our collection. Each piece is more than a decoration; it’s a story told through washi paper, carrying a special wish for your home🕊️

Nami-Usagi (Rabbit & Wave)
A spirited symbol of resilience, depicting a rabbit leaping gracefully over turbulent waves. In Japanese tradition, this motif represents the strength to overcome challenges and achieve great leaps forward.

Sitting Cat
A charming, soulful companion available in Black, White, or Calico. Each cat is hand-painted with its own unique personality, designed to welcome peace and daily good fortune to your favorite nook.

White Rabbit
Inspired by the ancient legend of the "White Hare of Inaba," a tale of kindness and new beginnings. This elegant doll captures the spirit of Tottori (Inaba) and serves as a gentle bringer of luck.

Meticulously hand-painted in Iwate, Japan, using the traditional ura-bari technique, these hariko are designed to fill your living space with light and "good vibes."

Indigo Dyeing Mini Workshop
at asaru studio, Singapore

Thank you very much — the Yumihama Kasuri weaving workshop is now fully booked.

To give more people a chance to experience Yumihama Kasuri and indigo dyeing, I will be holding a small indigo dyeing mini workshop.

This workshop is inspired by origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding.
Participants will fold non-woven fabric like origami, and dye it in indigo while keeping the folded shape.

Participants will also receive a handmade bookmark from Kobo Yumihama, and you may choose your favorite pattern to take home.

Those who are joining the weaving workshop are also very welcome to participate.

No reservation is required, so please feel free to stop by during the session times.

For this workshop, we will be using an indigo vat prepared by Chizu Blue, who held a workshop at the same venue last December and brought the indigo from Japan.
I am very grateful for their generosity in allowing us to use it.

yamanitori, Embroidery Born from the Rhythms of Life

Hand-stitched in Tottori, Yamanitori (山ニ鳥) creates embroidery that breathes in the quiet "in-between" moments of daily life. Drawing from her roots in Kogin-zashi, each piece is a soulful expression of texture and light.

By layering up to six different shades of thread, she achieves an incredible three-dimensional depth that makes every motif—from playful cats to seasonal symbols truly one-of-a-kind 🧵

⏰Times: Mon–Sat 11:00–19:00, Sun 14:30–18:30

Reflection

Beyond the museum pieces often seen abroad, we present the high-quality everyday crafts that define the texture of Taiwanese life. This project is an initiative of the Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA). Curated and created by emerging talents, this collection captures the “now” of Taiwan’s craft scene—a vibrant landscape where heritage meets a new generation of creativity.

Reflection—it is the shimmer of glass, lacquer, and shell. It is the unique evolution of Taiwan’s culture, reflecting diverse historical influences and its own tradition. And it is the artisan’s quiet contemplation—rethinking tradition through a modern, meta-perspective.
