As an Orton-Gillingham teacher for over 20 years, I’ve found that spelling sticks best when we’re using explicit teaching, connecting sounds to letters, and giving students plenty of opportunities to practice those patterns in meaningful ways.
That’s one reason I love the Science of Reading approach. Instead of asking students to memorize hundreds of words, we’re teaching them how our language works so they can apply those skills to new words independently.

One of the biggest things I remind teachers and parents is this: b/d reversals are incredibly common—especially in the early grades. Research shows that reversals happen for all kinds of learners as the brain is still learning how to store and retrieve letter patterns.
It does not automatically mean something is seriously wrong. 💛
