Orkesta Mendoza ist das geistige Kind des in Tucson ansässigen Produzenten, Komponisten und Multiinstrumentalisten Sergio Mendoza – einem Pionier der lateinamerikanischen Musik, dessen Sound in dem Ort verwurzelt ist, der ihn geprägt hat. Sergio wuchs an der internationalen Grenze in Ambos Nogales auf und nahm von Kindheit an die eklektische Mischung der Musik auf, die aus den Radiosendern von Bordertown strömte. Dieses Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit hat seine Arbeit bis heute geprägt.
Das Ergebnis ist eine kühne Mischung aus Indie-Rock und lateinamerikanischer Musik, die zu einem Eckpfeiler der Kultur von Tucson geworden ist – und ein Sound, der sich durch Mendozas Begabung für globale Zusammenarbeit ständig weiterentwickelt. Von der Arrangierung von „Esto Sí Es Cumbia” für Los Ángeles Azules bis zur Co-Produktion von Alben mit Joey Burns und John Convertino von Calexico bringt Orkesta Mendoza Musiker aus verschiedenen Regionen und Genres zusammen, um etwas ganz Eigenes zu schaffen.
