I’m struggling to find the words, but my heart is absolutely overflowing. I am beyond honoured to be named a Hometown Hero, but seeing my very own K6 phone box unveiled in the city centre... I’m still pinching myself (and yes, I absolutely cried!)
This isn’t just my box. It belongs to my amazing Mum and Dad, who have been my rocks through everything. And it belongs to every single person who has ever felt lost, just like I did.
The Journey - Standing here, I can’t help but look back. I remember walking past this very spot in the grips of a life-threatening eating disorder, walking aimlessly just trying to escape my pain. I also remember passing it years later, working every job I could find in the city to save up for my drama school auditions. If you’d told that girl back then that she’d be immortalised on a Hull landmark for her work as an actress, as CEO of and for her mental health advocacy... she never would have believed you.
Aw for the Design - I wanted this box to reflect the soul of our city. That’s why you’ll see and featured—two staples of our culture that mean the world to me.
A massive thank you to and for the incredible photography and capturing my ❤️ so beautifully —thank you for truly capturing ME...I couldn't think of a better picture to be immortalised 🙏
And of course to KCOM and everyone who nominated me.
As if I'm a little piece of history?! For those who don’t know, Hull is the only place in the UK with these iconic cream phone boxes! While the rest of the country went red, Hull kept its own independent network, and these beautiful K6 boxes are now celebrating 90 years of history. Being part of that legacy is a dream come true.
And the celebrations aren't over! I am so privileged to be judging the final shortlist for another 9 Hometown Heroes. Our city is full of legends, and I can’t wait to celebrate them.
For now, I’m going to stop typing, take a breath, and just soak it all in.
