1. Christ the Redeemer: One of the New Seven Wonders of the World and one of the best places for panoramic views of the entire city! It’s a 20-minute train ride up from the base of Mount Corcovado (or a 2-3 hour hike!). There’s no entry fee, but the train ticket costs about $15 per person.
2. Parque Lage: A public park in the Botanical Gardens neighborhood, located at the foot of Mount Corcovado. It features a beautiful café in an old mansion (fun fact: this is where the British Olympic team stayed during Rio 2016!). It’s an ideal place to stroll and enjoy Rio’s natural beauty.
3. Ipanema Beach: My favorite beach in Rio! It’s the perfect place for sipping on caipirinhas (Brazil’s version of a mojito!), surfing, sunbathing, swimming, people-watching, and joining in on some football or beach volleyball.
4. Downtown Rio: Start at Rua Uruguaiana and explore the neighborhood. Sip on freshly squeezed orange juice from the vendors, try some Brazilian street food, and check out the local boutiques and cafés.
5. Escadaria Selarón (Lapa Steps): 250 steps covered in mosaics from nearly every country in the world! It’s an artistic masterpiece and a sight to behold. It’s also a great starting point to explore the Lapa and Santa Teresa neighborhoods on foot and admire some of the old-world architecture.
7. Copacabana Beach: Another of Rio’s favorite beaches, overlooking Sugarloaf Mountain. Unlike Ipanema, Copacabana is nestled in a bay, making it better for relaxing with less wind! Just like Ipanema, you can join in the festivities and enjoy local drinks and street food right on the beach.
