Tomorrow, Wednesday May 27th at 10 AM come to Simcoe Hall and attend our press conference to show your support for ending U of T’s sponsorship of the weapons conference CANSEC. Time and time again U of T has ignored our calls for justice, whether it was our open letter, attempt to speak at governing council, or our email blast. Enough is enough - U of T must listen to the student and worker groups representing over 80, 000 U of T community members rather than chasing private money from weapons manufacturers

27 King’s College Circle (outside Simcoe Hall, facing King’s College Circle)
🚨URGENT ACTION 🚨

Go to the link in bio to send an email TODAY to U of T to demand that they revoke their sponsorship of the weapons conference CANSEC.

CANSEC is a weapons trade show that hosts numerous weapons manufacturers and governments accused of war crimes and human rights abuses. A few of the weapons manufactures exhibiting at CANSEC that are complicit in war crimes and/or human rights violations include Elbit Systems, Roshel and Lockheed Martin.

This year U of T became the first university to ever sponsor CANSEC.

On May 12th U of T students, workers and faculty published an open letter demanding that the University of Toronto revoke its sponsorship of CANSEC. This letter was signed by 20 U of T student, worker and faculty groups and unions, but has so far been ignored by U of T administration. Additionally, on May 13th the U of T denied a student the opportunity to express concerns about the sponsorship of CANSEC at the University of Toronto Governing Council meeting despite the student following all proper procedures to speak.

These actions are in direct violation of U of T’s mission statement that commits to the “vigilant protection for individual human rights, and a resolute commitment to the principles of equal opportunity, equity and justice”.
Today we, the undersigned student groups, workers, unions, and faculty have sent a letter to the University demanding that they revoke their sponsorship of CANSEC. CANSEC is an annual Canadian defence and security conference that hosts weapons manufacturers and governments accused of war crimes and human rights abuses.

UofT’s sponsorship marks the first time in CANSEC’s history that a public university has sponsored the event. We reject this move towards militarism by the University and demand that UofT uphold its very own mission in the protection of human rights and the advancement of justice by:

1. Revoking their sponsorship from CANSEC
2. Not sending representatives to attend
CANSEC
3. Implementing a divestment policy for weapons companies and other companies that violate human rights, similar to the University’s policy on fossil fuel divestment
4. Refusing to partner with weapons companies complicit in war crimes or human rights violations for research or commercial purposes

Fall is finally here! Welcome back to campus. OPIRG Toronto has been busy these past few months and is happy to (re)introduce everyone to the Dr Chun Resource Library.

First opened back in 2000, the Dr Chun Library has slowly acquired texts from decades of resistance, such as histories of university corporatization, prophetic protests from climate justice movements, and prescient political analysis of organising across Tkarónto. From West German Communist VHS tapes to zines reflecting on G20, we’ve got something for everyone! Stop by the OPIRG office to check out our stacks and archival materials. Room 318 in the UTSU building, 230 College Street, 12-5pm Monday to Friday. See ya there!
