This “free the animal” activity might look like simple safari fun, but it’s actually packed with opportunities to build important fine motor and problem solving skills!
As kids work to remove the elastics, they’re practicing:
✨ Fine motor precision
✨ Pincer grasp + tripod grasp
✨ Digit isolation
✨ Dynamic finger movements
✨ Bilateral coordination
✨ Motor planning
✨ Problem solving + flexible thinking
✨ Persistence and resilience when things get tricky!
One of our favourite parts about activities like this is how easy it is to disguise hard work as play. Whether your child is a zookeeper, safari explorer, or animal rescuer, adding imagination can make skill-building so much more engaging 🐾
What’s YOUR favourite fine motor activity to use at home, in the classroom, or in therapy? ⬇️ We’re always looking for new ideas to try!

When a client says “I wanna go FAST” on the scooter board… we know we’ve got a mini F1 driver on our hands 😄
But beyond the fun, scooter boards are doing some serious work 👇
• Vestibular input → movement + speed help activate the vestibular system, which supports balance, coordination, and spatial awareness
• Sensory regulation → that controlled “fast” input can be organizing (or alerting!) depending on how it’s used
• Core + postural strength → staying stable while moving = sneaky strengthening
• Smooth transitions → turning therapy into a game makes it easier to move between activities without resistance
It’s play with a purpose… and maybe a few pit stops along the way 🛞

We usually think of burnout as an “adult thing” (hello work, chores, never-ending to-do lists 😅), but it really just comes down to this: when we don’t get enough time to recharge, our bodies and brains start to feel it.
Autistic children (and adults!) can experience burnout too! It might look like:
✨ having a harder time doing everyday tasks
✨ feeling more overwhelmed than usual
✨ losing interest in activities they normally love
This is where OT (and PT!) can make a big difference! Helping kids build regulation strategies, recover their energy, and get back to feeling like themselves again.
Because everyone deserves time to fill their cup 🫶
What are your go-to burnout recovery strategies? 👇

We love using visual schedules to support routine and transitions between activities, but it can be so darn frustrating when you can’t find that one activity!
But that’s okay, we can use this as an opportunity to work on flexibility and divergent thinking! 🧠

Try this simple “Rainbow Footprint” game!
How to set it up:
Lay out coloured footprints (or paper, tape, or anything you have!) in a line on the floor, like a rainbow.
How to play:
Call out instructions for your child to follow as they move along the colours. For example: “Jump to red… now blue… now green…”
You can mix it up by adding:
• Forward or backward jumps
• One foot vs two feet
• Faster or slower pacing
When they reach the last colour (we used purple ), you have two options:
• Keep giving directions (e.g., go backwards!)
• Or say a pre-decided “secret word” that tells them to stop
The goal is for your child to listen carefully and wait for the right cue before moving.
What this works on:
✔️ Following directions
✔️ Attention & focus
✔️ Working memory (remembering steps)
✔️ Motor planning & coordination
✔️ Body awareness
✔️ Flexibility when rules change
✔️ Self-regulation & pacing
It’s simple, active, and easy to adapt for any age or skill level!

She has been a long time client of the clinic and has been working hard to build strength, endurance, and mobility with Kristi (PT)! We love having the opportunity to make a difference in our clients lives, and want to share this one with you all. Here is Lucia’s story:
Lucia began physiotherapy at On The Ball in September 2023, shortly after being diagnosed with Rett syndrome. Since then, she has also participated in hydrotherapy, and both therapies have been guided by Kristi, who has been incredibly supportive throughout our journey. Lucia truly loves working with her, and that bond has made a meaningful difference in her motivation and comfort during therapy. We have attended therapy consistently every week since starting, and the team at On The Ball has been extremely accommodating and dedicated to helping Lucia maintain her strength and mobility. Their ongoing support has been essential as we work toward accessing a promising gene therapy treatment for Rett syndrome. Our family is currently fundraising to obtain this treatment through the Special Access Program, and in the meantime, the care Lucia receives at On The Ball helps keep her strong and moving forward.
If you’d like to support Lucia’s journey with us, we encourage you to follow her page
Thank you Lucia for letting us share your story!💙
