Bringing together voices from across art, activism, research, and cultural organizing, In But Not Of explores a central tension of cultural work: how to remain independent while working within the very systems we seek to transform. Through essays, fiction, and situated reflections, the book examines commoning as a lived practice, one shaped by collective survival, care, redistribution, and autonomy.

It’s too hot to be cool ☀️

Due to the extreme heat, Onomatopee will be closed this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. As much as we love gathering around books, ideas, and exhibitions, we can’t currently offer the cooling refuge these temperatures call for.

So instead, we prescribe a different kind of visit: take your (Onomatopee) book to the beach, a shady patch of grass, a cool couch corner, or the edge of a pool. Let the pages do the travelling while you stay comfortably still.

We’ll be back next weekend when the temperature (and our walls) have calmed down a little.

Stay cool out there 💥

Launch of IN BUT NOT OF
presentation by editors Cecilia Casabona and Noam Youngrak Son at 6.30pm

Working within cultural institutions creates a core tension: how can you stay independent while trying to change the very systems you’re part of? In But Not Of: Practices of Commoning in Art and Infrastructure explores that tension by mapping out how “commons” can exist both outside and inside the structures of cultural production.

With contributions from Andrea J. Nightingale, Andrea Thal, Bianca Schick, Binna Choi, Chris Lee, Clara Balaguer, Dalia Maini, Josh Plough, Lorenzo Gerbi, Madhumita Nandi, Maren Bang, Nina Martin, Noam Youngrak Son, Noura Alkhalili, Pete Fung, Peter Linebaugh, Simon Fairlie, Wojciech Matejko, and Yin Awien, this collection goes beyond the usual critiques of institutions. It connects cultural commoning to wider histories of social struggle – from the privatization of common land in Britain to the destruction of Palestinian shared farming systems under colonial rule. The book looks at the spaces around institutions as both fragile commons and practical foundations for change.

Through essays, real-world examples, and fiction, these cultural organizers, writers, and artists from different fields and places tackle this tension head-on. How do collectives survive budget cuts and political crackdowns? How do Indigenous ways of knowing challenge institutional ideas about sharing and care? Can circulation and debt be turned into tools for redistribution? And how can speculation and science fiction help us practice autonomy even within systems that limit it?
Instead of just talking about autonomy, this collection pushes for real strategies. It gives cultural organizers a crucial framework for navigating conflicting values—especially now, when the same institutions can fund both decolonial art and genocide.

In a time of war, when the fragility of life is a daily, bodily reality, the question of how we survive together becomes most urgent.

Our upcoming exhibition, How matter comes to matter, explores precarity as a shared condition and a ground for collaborative survival—among human and non-human beings alike. It approaches survival not as an individual feat, but as a collective practice of vulnerability and interdependence.

The featured artists articulate survival through “material kinship,” where objects carry ancestral traces and memory, and where “knowing” something means becoming kin: to be entangled with.

Join us in a world that persists beyond visibility, one already present yet waiting to be fully realized: a world where matter matters, and collective survival emerges through the tender entanglements of our shared existence.

How do we matter in the world?
