The pupils dilate before the mind even registers why. Eye contact activates the same neural pathways as physical touch - your nervous system doesn’t distinguish between the two. Oxytocin releases. Heart rate shifts. In under 200 milliseconds your brain has already decided whether it trusts what it sees. We think we choose what we reveal, but the eyes are running a different program entirely - one that bypasses language, bypasses composure, and goes straight to whatever you actually are underneath all of it.
Anxiety note- Your nervous system cannot tell the difference between a real threat and an imagined one. It responds the same way to a lion and to a text you haven’t answered yet. Heart rate up, breathing shallow, mind scanning for danger. That’s anxiety. It’s not weakness or irrationality, it’s a survival system running in a context it wasn’t designed for. The problem isn’t that it fires. The problem is that it never gets the all-clear signal because the “threat” never fully resolves. You just sit in the activation. That’s the loop.
Dark academia started gaining traction on Tumblr around 2015 and 2016, where users were pairing moodboard images of old universities, classical art, and worn books with poetry and literary quotes. It stayed relatively niche there for a few years before TikTok pushed it into mainstream visibility in late 2019 going into 2020. The pandemic actually accelerated its rise because millions of people were stuck inside romanticizing the idea of grand lecture halls and cobblestone campuses they could not access. By mid 2020 it was one of the most searched aesthetics on the internet and had fully crossed over into fashion, music, and visual art.
Manga didn’t always look like this.

There was a shift somewhere between the clean-line shonen of the 80s and the mid-90s where artists started pulling from darker places. Crosshatching got heavier. Eyes went hollow. Shadows stopped being decorative and started feeling like they were swallowing the characters whole.

Kentaro Miura was the clearest signal. By the time Berserk’s Eclipse arc hit print in 1989, manga anatomy had learned how to look genuinely haunted. But he wasn’t alone. Artists like Ito Junji warped the body horror tradition into something that felt biological and wrong in ways that ink had never quite captured before.

The gothic influence wasn’t just aesthetic, it was structural. Less motion blur, more stillness. Panels that held the weight of something unsaid. Faces that looked like they had already seen the worst thing and were waiting for it to happen again.

That era broke something open in what the medium was allowed to look like, and a lot of what we call “dark manga” today is still living inside that shadow.
People always ask why black and white animation takes longer than regular color animation, and the answer might surprise you.

You’d think removing color would make things faster. Less to fill in, right? Actually the opposite is true. Without color to guide the eye and separate elements, every line has to carry the full weight of the story. Shadows, texture, depth, contrast — all of it has to be built through line work and shading alone. One frame can take 3 to 5 times longer than a standard colored frame.

Color animation uses flat fills and gradients to define space quickly. Black and white forces the animator to think in values, in light sources, in how a silhouette reads from across a room. Every decision is deliberate. Every stroke is intentional.

That’s why when you see black and white animation done right, it hits different. You’re looking at hours of invisible work in every second of movement.

The craft is in what you don’t notice.
Your brain actually responds to words. Positive affirmations activate the reward centers in your brain the same way food or music does — it’s not just motivation, it’s neuroscience.

Anime figured this out before the studies did.

This is definitely a dream milestone for me.
Thank you to everyone who’s supported me to get me here, it’s truly a special opportunity to take part in being the soundtrack to your life or to take up any of your time. I’m truly grateful for it.

On a side note..
I’m doing the thing that almost everyone said isn’t possible lol.
I’m One of the first ever local rappers from Utah to make it this far,
It makes me happy cause I’ve sacrificed a ton behind the scenes to progress so to see it happening is a great feeling.

I had to become a rapper
I had to become a producer
I had to become a editor
I had to learn how to promote etc etc etc.
there’s so much more to it.

Carving the path out’ve the stigma and building a dream one brick at a time with many more to go with the energy to do it- to be continued.
