Durante esa época, brotaba en mi, un talento por la música, así que una de mis maestras me motivó a participar en mi primer festival de música tradicional venezolana.
Llegó el día del festival. Casi todos los participantes, incluyéndome, interpretamos canciones tipicas del llano venezolano, con liqui liqui, sombrero y alpargatas. Pero ese día hubo una participación distinta a las demás; Maximina subía al escenario junto a sus hijos, con tambores, vestuarios coloridos y más acompañantes. Aquello captó mi atención inmediata. Y luego del primer repique de tambor, un coro que se instaló en mi mente hasta el día de hoy:
“El Cacao de Chuao, que viva, que viva.”
Ese canto, junto a los sonidos del tambor que me estremecían, me hicieron llegar a casa y preguntarle a mi mamá: ¿qué es el cacao?, ¿qué es Chuao?
A lo que ella respondió: “Del cacao se prepara el chocolate. El cacao se cultiva en Chuao. Y en Chuao nació Maximina.”
Chuao es un pequeño pueblo costero, escondido entre grandes montañas en el estado Aragua, en Venezuela. Un territorio al que no es sencillo acceder, solo se puede llegar por mar o atravesando antiguos caminos entre la montaña.
El cacao es el corazón de Chuao. Un cacao criollo, delicado y escaso, considerado entre los mejores del mundo, no solo por su sabor, sino por la forma en que se cultiva: a mano, en comunidad, acompañado de cantos, secado al sol frente a la iglesia del pueblo, eso que Maximina y sus hijos honraron con tanta presencia aquella mañana en el pequeño festival cultural.
Quizás por eso, cuando pienso en Chuao, no lo pienso como un lugar geográfico, sino como una sensación. Un eco. Un ritmo.
Porque siento que hay lugares que pueden conocerse primero a través del sonido.
A través de la voz de alguien más, a través de un tambor que, sin saberlo, se queda latiendo dentro de uno durante años.
Hoy esta memoria se expande también gracias al trabajo de, quienes han sostenido y compartido el legado a través de generaciones. Su presencia en Cuenca junto a, cada vez más frecuente, no solo acerca la tradición, sino que trae un poco de Píllaro, de su energía, su historia y su cultura, haciéndola latir en otros territorios.
