Olivier Jobard / MYOP for The PhotoBridge Project
Alors que le Proche-Orient est à feu à sang, la question de « l’après-guerre » se pose plus que jamais. En Syrie, à Yarmouk, un médecin s’est engagé dans un temps infiniment plus long que celui des combats, celui de la reconstruction, après une décennie de brutalités.
1/ Sortie de classe de l’école Mjedel (« modèle »), une des deux écoles rouvertes depuis la chute de Bachar el-Assad. L’école est gérée par l’UNRWA et accueille 1 600 élèves - les garçons viennent le matin et les filles l’après-midi-.
2/ Le camp de Yarmouk s’étend sur plus de 2 km2 et se situe à 8 km du centre de Damas, la capitale. Avant la guerre, environ 200 000 Palestiniens y vivaient, représentant la plus grande communauté de réfugiés palestiniens au monde.
3/ Yarmouk est sorti de terre après la Naqba, l’exode forcé des Palestiniens causé par la création de l’Etat d’Israël à partir de 1957. Le camp de réfugiés fut construit, développé et agrandi à un point tel qu’il était devenu une ville d’un million d’habitants, avec le plus grand marché de Syrie.
4/ Yarmouk n’avait plus de « camp » que le surnom. Ses habitants, dont 20 % de Palestiniens, appartenaient à la classe moyenne ou supérieure:
5/ Le docteur Khaldoun porte l’espoir. En février 2025, il a créé une association, Maison Palestine, pour aider les Syriens à revenir vivre à Yarmouk.
6/ Le Dr Khaldoun soigne Hassan Hammond, le mari de Makboula. Le couple a survécu au siège imposé par les forces pro-régime, tout comme le Dr Khaldoun. Il a vu et compté 188 personnes mortes de faim durant deux ans d’un siège imposé par les forces pro-régime avant la prise de Yarmouk par l’ « Etat Islamique ».
7/ Les bruits de travaux résonnent au quotidien. La première étape est de déblayer les décombres. Yarmouk a été détruit à 80 % par les bombardements et les combats.

Il y a exactement 30 ans, le 14 juillet 1995, nous avons découvert plusieurs milliers de femmes et d’enfants, tous réfugiés de Srebrenica, rassemblés devant la base de l’ONU à l’aéroport de Tuzla.
Quelques jours plus tard, certains hommes ont commencé à apparaître, épuisés après avoir parcouru près de cent kilomètres à pied à travers un territoire ennemi.
Ils venaient d’échapper au massacre de Srebrenica, où 8 000 Bosniaques ont été exécutés par les forces serbes de Bosnie-Herzégovine.
Exactly 30 years ago, on July 14, 1995, we discovered several thousand women and children — all refugees from Srebrenica — gathered in front of the UN base at Tuzla airport.
A few days later, some men began to appear, exhausted after walking nearly a hundred kilometers through enemy territory.
They had just escaped the Srebrenica massacre, where 8,000 Bosniaks were executed by Serbian forces.
In 2015, Ahmed and Jihane fled Syria with their 18-month-old and 5-year-old children. We accompanied them over 4,000 km to document their journey into exile all the way to Sweden. Ten years later, the Syrian couple could never have imagined witnessing the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. The family has built a life in Sweden. They are all naturalized citizens and speak Swedish. Now they face a dilemma: stay or return? They take advantage of the school holidays to make a first trip back to Syria and reconnect with their relatives. Ahmed is determined to show their now-grown children the reality of their origins. Jihane, on the other hand, returns reluctantly—too much blood, too many tears, haunted by a survivor’s guilt. But she joins her husband and children because the family is held together by love.
