The second image is part of a little series I’ve been collecting that I’ve been calling “moms being moms.” I find these moments so tender and precious —— last year I found so many of these….moms steaming a dress or making coffee for the wedding party at their home or cutting the vent threads out of a jacket on a groomsman or bringing a curling iron to the reception “just in case.” They always say “oh are you sure you want this???” when I take a photo like this but years into the future I know what these photos will mean…photos of moms showing their love through action, being unable to help themselves even on this day when so much is being done by someone else. I find it so charming and incredibly endearing and I’ve been making a little collection of these photos for some time that I hope to share in a more full set soon.
I want to write something longer about this soon but if you’re looking to hire a photographer, I think the biggest thing to seek is perspective that aligns with your own. What is the photographer driven by? What are they noticing on a day filled with hundreds or thousands of possible moments and choices? Is a moment like that something to pass by in favor of something more “perfect” or is that moment telling a story in itself? More on this soon…
Less content, more lasting legacy. Less self-promotion, more embracing a service mindset whether that means providing a calming sounding board or fastening a bride’s shoes for her late night look. Always trying to find ways to surprise and delight but letting them be true surprises for my clients to savor on their own terms.
In short, it was a year of truly trying to give and create, but also being quiet and intentional about it. The end result was a season of work I’m incredibly proud of, both from me and the amazingly talented team members who I am lucky to have join me both on wedding days and behind the scenes. I felt I unlocked new artistry that I had really been pushing to get closer to for years. I was fortunate to have my best year of business ever and I cannot thank my incredible clients and their families enough for trusting us to be the one to capture their celebrations. There is so much noise in wedding world — trends and pressure and so very many opinions. But I am infinitely lucky to have aligned with the right couples who get it, who understand the opportunity this day provides to gather with the people they care about most in the world.
I’m polishing edits on my final two weddings of the year but look forward to sharing some of the thousands of images I delivered this season in the new year. In the meantime, a few tiny snippets of this year and some of the incredibly kind words I received this year (these cards all deeply touched me — I didn’t post any of them and little did all these people know how much I adore receiving and sending physical letters…again…magical alignment with the right people this year).
Thank you for being here this year and supporting my work, and enormous thanks to the hundreds of gifted artisans and professionals I collaborated with this year. Everyone plays a vital role in the success of each beautiful event and the teams this year were really fantastic.
