On the morning of July 23rd, 1920, the Michigan Pikers Association was making it’s way from Thessalon to the Sault, having started their journey in Detroit on a tour to promote and advocate for the development of better roads for tourists. Being on the brink of finishing the Canadian leg of the trip, they would be met in Garden River by about 75 Saulites who made the journey to show them what kind of a welcome they could expect to receive.

Being in such close vicinity to the ferry dock at the foot of Brock Street at the time, the home in the foreground at 639 Wellington St. E. had rooms for tourists to rent out at a rate of $6.50 a week (roughly $139.40 these days). The home was under the name of Jas. C. Reddick, according to the Vernon's Street Directory for the Sault in 1932 with the also visible and neighbouring house at 635 Wellington St. E. under the name E.G. Freeman.
The third house in the background, at the time inhabited by Rev. C.W. Balfour of St. Luke's Cathedral and known as the deanery for the church, was briefly a youth drop in centre before zoning applications were accepted for the present-day William McMurray Apartments in April 1974.
Today, 639 was most recently the home of Staruck Norman Denture Clinic but appears to be back in residential use as is the same with their neighbours to the west at 635. The apartments that replaced St. Luke's historic deanery are also home to the offices for Anglican Diocese of Algoma.
Though much has changed since Mr. Platt took the above photo such as the street widening and further automobile accommodations leading to the paving of much of the greenery that once was, the cedar shingle siding being replaced with modern substitutes, and the loss of the Deanery, there are still some reminders which remain of what Wellington St. looked like over 90 years ago.
Original photo was taken in 1932 by Robert. S. Platt with present-day comparison taken by Jo Bumbacco in April 2023. Info sourced from the Sault Daily Star: January 8th, 1932, and April 18th, 1974.

Mr. Walker said he traveled all over Canada but had never seen anything quite like the Saults honor roll, congratulating Mayor Jack McMeeken and city council on a beautiful job well done. The idea was originally thought up by Alderman William Lightfoot, who was out of town for the celebration, and first sketched up and built by Len Ciaschini, who would become a soldier himself.
The beginning of the ceremony saw the Sault Concert Band kick-off festivities followed by opening proceedings by Mayor McMeeken atop an improvised podium. Mr. Harry Fee, head of the Soo Legion branch, paid special tribute to the work done by the War Services Committee of the Legion in the extensive research done supplying the 2,200 names added to the board.
Above each list of names, the appropriate flag was placed in a circle with a background of blue with gold trimmings with the board itself having a white background with black lettering. The names of those who were taken prisoner were followed by a “P” with those who were discharged, followed by a “D”. At night, it was constantly illuminated by spotlight.
Nine years after the end of the war, it was considered the board had served its purpose. It was dismantled on August 20th/21st, 1954, with the names of the fallen being added to the Cenotaph alongside those who served and sacrificed their lives during the Great War (1914-1918).

Built in 1938, the arch would be dismantled in 1964 after the ferry was made obsolete by the opening of the International Bridge in 1962.
In July 2011, it was restored in a local partnership between Essar Steel Algoma Inc., The SSM Rotary Club, M.R. Knight & Associates Co. Ltd. MGP Architects & Engineers Inc., Top Line Electric Ltd. and the City of Sault Ste Marie.
The video was shot sometime in 1938 and 1941 when Soo Outfitters was located near the Welcome Arch on lower Brock St.

At a cost of $17,590, it would unofficially open on Sept 26th, 1906 to a crowd of 360 with the official opening taking place almost a month later to coincide with a visit from M.P., leader of the conservative opposition, and future Prime Minister Robert L. Borden. 2400 seats were provided for the crowd, with an additional 600 having to find spots in the back isles.
The completion of this new school just a few years after the collapse of Clergues empire in 1903 was seen as a resurgence for the Sault. More kids were starting to attend school due to the city starting to come out of economic stagnation and the growth of the downtown residential population increasing.
Those to teach the first 18 pupils in the 8 room school were Principal M. Kaine, Ms. Walker, Miss Cook, Miss Thorburn, Miss Nicklen, Miss Campbell, and Ms. Clapp. The building would remain a school up until 1973 when it was closed and completely converted to accommodate 26 office spaces occupied by the school board, the Allied Arts Council, and the Algoma Steel engineering dept.
Campbell would meet its demise on Feb 27th, 1975, as a result of a massive fire. Firefighters arrived around 11PM only to find the building engulfed and a total loss.

Nearly everyone of note in Northern Michigan attended with hotels being so crowded on the American side that hotels in the Canadian Soo were also completely filled by the overflow. Festivities kicked off on the Wednesday morning with the naval parade when the United Steamers Marigold, Tuscarora, Morill, Mackinac, Wolverine, and Yantic sailed around the river front and passed through the canals on both sides of the river. A number of yachts and smaller craft also joined in. In the afternoon, a military parade was held with the bands of the First U.S. Regiment, Third Michigan, and Calumet and Heela Band participating. The American fireworks display was described as “good” but not to be compared to ours.
The second day began with band concerts and speeches with Canada being represented by Hon. Radolphe Lemieux and Hon Senator Dandurand, and by the afternoon, the Calumet and Heela band came across the river to serenade the town hall, the Sault Star Office, and International Hotel. Among the notable participants in the two day program were Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks, Governor General Fred M. Warner, and Congressman Burton.
