First published in Argentina between 1957–1959, The Eternaut was created by writer Héctor Germán Oesterheld and artist Francisco Solano López, originally serialised in Hora Cero Semanal. What began as a gripping science-fiction story soon became something far more enduring.
Set in Buenos Aires, the story follows Juan Salvo and a small group of survivors after a deadly, mysterious snowfall wipes out much of the population. As the truth behind the catastrophe is revealed, the comic transforms into a powerful meditation on invasion, resistance, and collective survival.
What made The Eternaut revolutionary was its perspective. Unlike many science-fiction stories of its time, salvation does not come from a lone hero. Survival depends on community, solidarity, and shared responsibility. This idea would become central to its legacy.
Over time, the book took on even deeper political meaning. Oesterheld later became openly critical of Argentina’s military dictatorship. In 1977, during the country’s Dirty War, he was forcibly disappeared by the regime, along with his daughters. His fate has forever tied The Eternaut to Argentina’s history of repression and resistance.
Today, The Eternaut is widely regarded as one of the most important graphic novels ever created, a cornerstone of Latin American comics, and a reminder of how genre storytelling can carry real political weight.
The new edition offers a chance to experience a true classic, as vital now as it was over sixty years ago.
