A conjuntivite apresenta irritação ocular, olho vermelho, lacrimejamento e pode estar associado a outros sintomas como tosse, febre, nariz escorrendo, dor de garganta.
O tratamento da conjuntivite é apenas sintomático com uso de lubrificante e compressas geladas. Não existe medicação para curar o quadro mais rapidamente, ela dura em torno de sete a dez dias.

O colírio que era usado era o nitrato de prata a 1% e agora a indicação é o uso de iodopovidona 2,5%, eritromicina 0,5% ou tetraciclina 1%.
Minha orientação é sempre usar o colírio de profilaxia da conjuntivite neonatal nos recem nascidos. O colírio previne um quadro gravíssimo de conjuntivite e seus efeitos colaterais são leves como irritação e vermelhidão ocular.
