Did you know that KATO USA has only produced 4 Steam Locomotives? Well, that’s a bit inaccurate because we actually produced other steam locomotives for manufacturers like Con-Cor way back in the past… But let’s not get into specifics okay? 😁
⭐ MIKADO (2-8-2) Released in 1996
The Mikado was one of the first “refined” steam engines in N-Scale. For the time, it was an extremely smooth running locomotive. This engine was given a couple of changes throughout its production history such as the change from hook to knuckle couplers.
⭐ GS4 (4-8-4) Released in 2008
The original Southern Pacific GS4 was released alongside an appropriate Daylight passenger train set. This locomotive would be modified to work with the EM13 decoder from KATO and it was able to handle some pretty ridiculous turns.
⭐ FEF-3 (4-8-4) Released in 2015
The FEF-3 was KATO’s third steam locomotive project and was released alongside matching rolling stock, including the Union Pacific Excursion Train Set. This locomotive is quite the show stopper with its stylish smoke deflectors and headlight on the front. This locomotive is still available today!
⭐ Big Boy ) Released in 2023
Thanks to the articulated design just like the real engine, the two sets of driving wheels are able to move independently which gives the engine the ability to navigate 11″ radius curves. This locomotive is still available today, and it’s currently running around The United States! Look outside your window!!

On July 1st 1862, in the midst of the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln signed The Pacific Railway Act which jumpstarted the construction of the transcontinental railroad in the United States. This act provided loans and grants to Union Pacific and was directly tied to the war effort which boosted the Union’s communities and military outposts.
In addition to 1616, we have decided to bring back UP’s “We are ONE” locomotive numbered 1979. This one of a kind locomotive pays tribute to Union Pacific’s diverse workforce and directly references the Employee Resource Groups available for UP workers. This engine features a beautiful paintscheme that is only provided by KATO in N-Scale!
Check out these locomotives today! 🛤️

In the early 1930s, railroads suffered great losses as people stopped taking the train due to the Great Depression, and the automobile was gaining popularity (yawn). Backed into a corner, the CB&Q decided to strike up a deal with the Budd company to create a “trainset of the future” to provide customers with streamlined service. Thankfully, Budd delivered!
On May 26th, 1934, it set a speed record for travel between Denver and Chicago. It made a 1015.4-mile run in about 13 hours and 5 minutes. This trip typically took two days, and the train reached a top speed of 112.5 mph. The Pioneer Zephyr even starred in the movie called The Silver Steak! But alas, all good things must come to an end.
The consist was finally retired in 1960, but thankfully, it was later donated to While passenger rail in the United States dwindled in popularity, the Pioneer Zephyr made a lasting impact on railroad history by propelling diesel power to passenger rail. 🚆

This service included the EMD E5A, nicknamed The Speeding Bullet. Named after a movie of the same name, the Silver Streak Zephyr was a short-distance luxury train that operated between Lincoln, Nebraska, and Kansas City, with stops in Omaha and St. Joseph. The Silver Streak ran with 5 lightweight passenger cars that were streamlined. The train was a popular choice for passengers, and was different from previous Zephyrs as the passenger cars were not articulated but rather connected traditionally. Unfortunately, like many named trains, the service was terminated in 1959.
While the age of the Zephyr is long over, you can enjoy the E5 Silver Streak locomotive at the Illinois Railway Museum, where it occasionally runs!
Stay tuned for another Zephyr announcement coming up realllllllly soon… 🤔

KATO USA will be producing a LIMITED EDITION Amtrak Amfleet Heritage Bookcase Set!
For many decades, Amtrak has received many cosmetic changes. As part of our celebration of 40 Years of KATO USA, we’d like to introduce you to this special book case set of Amfleet I cars. 🚃
During Amtrak’s early years, the company used old fashioned equipment passed down from other railroads. This would change with the introduction of the Amfleet I on the Northeast Corridor in 1975. These cars were designed for short-distance service and were followed up with the introduction of Amfleet II cars in 1981, which were used for long-distance service. These would mark the last intercity passenger cars produced by Budd. Let's pour one out for them. 😓
Each car represents a different Amtrak Phase! Here’s the full list:
Phase I No. 21134
Phase II No. 21020 (New Amfleet I!)
Phase III No. 21725
Phase IV No. 21254 (New Amfleet I!)
Phase V Acela No. 82511 (New Amfleet I!)
Phase VI No. 82707
Phase VII No. 82766 (New Amfleet I!)
All of these cars are brand new road numbers.
