They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result and yet that’s what I did for at least two years because I was scared of thinking about another option. I had 2 bakery locations in CA, we were in all the magazines, on the TV shows and I had over 40 employees but I didn’t feel like I had control of my life and I knew I wanted more hours where I was in control of my schedule.
After using doTERRA’s products for a couple years and sharing them just because I was a new mom that finally found a natural health option that worked, I finally saw it as a real business opportunity instead of just making a little side money as I continued with what I saw as my “real business”.
I always think it’s funny when people look down on direct sales or network marketing as if it’s not a real career, because I have been on both sides and I have to say I absolutely love what social selling has to offer (when done right and with a credible company) and what it’s created for my family and I.
Within 10 months of being in my same life situation at the time, but mentally saying yes to this new business and treating it like one too, I was making 2-3x’s the money. Within 2 years I was making over multiple 6 figures and a couple years after that we sold the bakeries and now I’m solely home with my babies and get to help customers with natural health options and mentor those that want to do that as a business too!
While the goal for some people with a side gig is to create financial freedom, most people really need financial breathing room. 94% of Americans are employed in traditional jobs and yet 40% of them can’t afford a $400 emergency fund. A side gig done right can truly make a huge difference!

It really is crazy how fast life goes by. 10 years ago I was knee-deep in motherhood which still feels similar to the season I’m in today since we decided to start all over again and have our little Ellie! Our life was chaotic, wild, fun and exhausting and it’s still that today! 😂
Back then, I never would’ve guessed I wouldn’t have the bakeries anymore. I love looking back at photos, but truly that season was a hard one where I definitely felt pulled in every direction and didn’t see a way out. I love starting a business and going all in and have incredible memories, but once I had kids having two bakery locations and 40 employees was too much for me to handle when my heart told me I wanted to always be with my babies.
2016 was the only year that Blake went to preschool two days a week, but then California passed their vaccine laws and that’s the year I decided we would homeschool, which changed our lives forever! I’m so thankful we decided to go on that journey and can’t imagine my life any different.
2016 was also the year that I took my hobby of using essential oils for my own family and decided that I would go all in doing doTERRA as a business even though I had my bakeries. It was a huge decision and felt like a big jump, but it was something I knew in my heart I had to do because I knew I couldn’t keep up with the bakery life forever, but needed a way to make substantial income since we live in California. This is also one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and continues to be the main reason why I am able to stay at home and homeschool my kids and still bring in an income. I have met so many other amazing women along the way and partnered with them and it truly has changed my life and I’m so grateful I said yes to the change.
It does always bring a tear to my eye when I think about the fact that Blake and Donovan will never be that tiny ever again but it makes me cherish every moment I have with Elle at this age even more!
