In guella parte di Shanghai che un tempo faceva parte della Concessione Francese (e che oggi è il cuore pulsante della città). Jean Nouvel realizza. tra il 2014 e il 2021, un progetto che collega Francia e Cina e che diventa immediatamente uno dei più importanti landmark architettonici del distretto di Huangpu.
Soprannominata "La strada dei 1000 vasi rossi". l'opera è costituita da due volumi di cinque pian ciascuno che definiscono una qalleria coperta a tutta altezza, la quale si ispira fortemente ai passages couverts della Pariqi del Settecento.
All'interno della galleria dominano il rosso, che è tra i colori più importanti nella cultura cinese, simbolo di gioia, ricchezza e vitalità, e il verde della ricca vegetazione, che trova dimora in centinaia di piccoli vasi (anch'essi tinti di rosso).
I suddetti vasi scandiscono l'andamento anche dei prospetti esterni, dove però il colore rosso lascia spazio ad una tonalità beige che rende l'edificio più sobrio e meno impattante esternamente e che amplifica il senso di stupore e meraviglia nei confronti del passage couvert.
