Friday feels.

Keeping it real.
Because if they’re lying about the facts and making up stories about the people and places, then they’re likely lying about more. It’s my logic and I’m sticking to it.

But I won’t be sharing the brand name!

From Episode 2: "A Taste of Mezcal": When mezcal evokes memories of mom’s kitchen or relatives spritzing the spirit to the earth, it becomes clear that smoke has never been adequate to describe a taste of mezcal. In Esculent’s next episode, we are joined by ’s founder, Fabiola Santiago, as we take a look at the different ways people encounter mezcal — either through tasting wheels, aromas, or the memories and relations we ascribe to the beverage. How can we fill in the gaps from tasting wheels that enforce Eurocentric aromas? Together, we start thinking about how one can ā€œtasteā€ mezcal in ways that create relations rather than orchestrate erasure.

ID: Text is set against a bowl of roasted grasshoppers and reads "Anybody who is trying mezcal for the first time, approach it with their self-reflection and interrogating themselves, and maybe before they start looking at a wheel, maybe they can look at it, but create your own. That's really how you can create more of your own relationship to the spirit."
Similar to greenwashing, to say that one is collaborative but not act accordingly is dishonest. It also speaks to how deeply engrained these belief systems become in how we relate to each other.

So much love to the collaborations has been a part of. Because *how* we make impact and reach outcomes matters. It is the foundation of systems change work.
Because I would never start a charcuterie board business without correct pronunciation.

We live in a world where everyone wakes up immediately attached to their phones. While social media is a great tool to raise awareness, there is undeniably more value in building actual, real-life relationships based on trust and genuine conversation.

Are we putting our energy into the right places, or just chasing empty metrics? Let’s talk about it in the comments. šŸ‘‡

"Poverty there is different than poverty here." šŸŒŽ

As gentrification and "touristification" continue to rise in Mexico, native populations are facing unprecedented displacement. But how these communities govern themselves—and how they experience poverty—might surprise you.

In this clip, we break down:
šŸ—£ļø The actual meaning of the word "gringo" in Mexico
āš–ļø Usos y Costumbres (customary law) and indigenous self-governance
šŸ˜ļø Why you won't see the same type of homelessness in Mexican pueblos as you do in the US
What are your thoughts on the impact of "touristification"? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

The discrepancies:
• Oaxaca has one of the largest Indigenous populations
• Oaxaca has one of the highest poverty rates
• Oaxaca is one of the most bio-diverse, and culturally diverse, states in MX

National based identity is not the same as ethnic identity. Proximity from national identity isn’t a pass to commodify and capitalize.

My credentials:
• I’m from the world capital of mezcal, Santiago Matatlan
• so many of my relatives had to migrate when we couldn’t survive off of mezcal production (before the boom)
• I played in the arroyo as a child. My child can’t play in that arroyo because distillation waste is dumped in those streams. Conversations about cultural responsibility to come.
Not all Mexicans are Indigenous. And they show it.

Content creator whose experiences I talk about to support my point:
This has been weighing on my mind and heart since the wave of terror against immigrant communities began earlier this year. An intersectional reflection on mezcal, migration, deportation, and consumerism.

I’m closer to logging off for the week to spend uninterrupted time with my son—because for many of us, the scar of family separation never lets us forget that this country was never built to keep our families together.
