Safe to say this project earned a permanent spot in the lesson lineup 💛 Huuuuge shoutout to for convincing me to drop everything and jump onto this project right before the art show! 😂 Best last minute decision ever! We didn’t have the time to color our cakes like hers, but I thought the white frosting was extremely realistic either way! We even designed and made the clay cake stands to complete our bakery gig! So in love with how they turned out!
Maybe Hermes needs to hire my creative scarf designers. Radial name designs, our first project of the year in 5th grade. August post in…..May! There ya have it!! 😝

I’m officially keeping this project as my 5th grade opener for the beginning of the school year!:)
Our annual Kokeshi doll portraits by 4th grade

We begin this lesson by exploring the influence Japanese art and artists had on Van Gogh, and how they inspired the very elements of his work that we so love.

Of course, we couldn’t complete this portrait project without incorporating a few impasto-style, Van Gogh inspired brushstrokes into our backgrounds!
Such a simple and successful introduction to yarn weaving with these popsicle stick looms. I hot glued six sticks together to create the loom for my fist graders, then taught students to weave over and under the warp. The small size keeps it manageable for first-time weavers, finishing with a beaded pipe cleaner handle for the sweetest touch!:)

We wrapped up the project in just two classes!
I mean, can you go wrong with a scarf and a beanie on a tortoise? ☺️ I know we’re heading into summer, but these winter tortoises are for all seasons….they’re so adorable! 🙃

Ps: if you’re new here, pls check out my air dry clay story highlights for allllll the air dry clay tips and tricks I share! I’ve accumulated a wealth of air dry clay knowledge over the decades. I have never taught in a school with a kiln, and so air dry clay has been my only option!:)
Kindergarten Landscapes inspired by the wonderful

We made these at the beginning of the school year when we were reviewing our primary and secondary colors, and other elements of art like lines and shapes. Kinder artists explored mixing their own secondary green and created textured backgrounds inspired by. I showed them how to snip the corners of tissue paper rectangles to form rolling hills, then glue them along the horizon line. They finished by adding houses and little laundry lines using painted paper.

Such a joyful lesson, I can already tell this one is going into the repeat pile!!!
There’s no way this is all coming down immediately the next morning…..
Ahhh but yes, it is!:)
Kndergarten made Ruth Asawa inspired sculptures from simple lanterns - I only wish I had the space to display every single one they created. I managed to hang a few strands, and it made me so happy to include them in our show.

I originally had an even bigger vision using lanterns, glue, and yarn, but time just wasn’t on our side. Maybe it’s an idea I’ll revisit another year… for now, I’m tucking it safely away in my “future projects” folder in my mind.
Art Show 2026 ✅ DONE!
Seeing their eyes light up, jaws drop, proud smiles, and those sweet, genuine reactions - after hours and hours of labor… worth every bit of the exhaustion! Now that it’s all over, Im trying to rearrange and organize my classroom for regular classes and it’s so heartbreaking to pull down the displays within seconds when it took me hours to put them up! Sigh!

Ps: more art show posts coming your way this week and I’ll share some projects in more detail and the inspiration behind them!
Missing my librarian bestie and thought I’d upcycle something silly for her with egg cartons and her favorite classic book characters. Not complete yet- I just need to get a shadow box to place these in. Can you name them?

The video tutorial is under the reels tab- so be sure to check it out! I have also uploaded it to my YouTube channel upon popular demand:) Happy creating!

Ps: since I had posted this idea, it’s gone viral multiple times. You’ll find it all over Pinterest, craft blogs, YouTube, and it was featured in a Parent’s magazine…..it’s even appeared on TV multiple times! If you’re reading this, you’re looking at the original post and its creator! If you’re a creator yourself and have shared this idea too, pls leave a comment, I’d love to see what you’ve created! Welcome!
