Five years later, the parish celebrated the blessing of its rebuilt rectory with. More than a residence for priests, the rectory is a central part of parish life, where the needs of the community are served and parish ministries are supported.
During his July 12 visit, Cardinal Tobin blessed the restored spaces with holy water, marking a new chapter for the historic parish community.

On the morning of July 12, Cardinal Tobin visited the historic parish to bless the rebuilt rectory.
After offering a prayer in the new conference room (named in honor of Father Gaetano Ruggiero, who served as pastor of Saint Lucy’s from 1934-1966), the cardinal went from space to space blessing them with holy water, accompanied by some parish representatives and clergy.
At the Sunday Mass that followed the rectory blessing, Cardinal Tobin said that he was grateful to be in the presence of “a historic community that welcomes people from all over the world.” The liturgy reflected the richness and diversity of that community as readings and prayers were offered in English, Italian, Spanish, and French.
Father Aleti said that the fire and rebuilding efforts had “focused” the diverse Saint Lucy community to “come together as a family and support the repair of the rectory.”
“Having priests closer to the Christians they serve is important, but the rectory is also where we have our parish offices where we attend to the needs of our Christian community. We do all the administration there, so it is central to the life of the parish,” said Father Chris Aleti, M.C.C.J., administrator of Saint Lucy’s.
Before the final blessing, the parish thanked Cardinal Tobin and the Office of Property Management for their support, along with a list of parishioners and community members who had played key roles in the rebuilding process.
Father Aleti was especially praised for his faith, encouragement, and leadership.
The aftermath of the 2021 fire in the rectory of Saint
Knight of Columbus David Cordero welcomed visitors to venerate the relics of six Mexican martyrs at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart from July 4-6 as part of a nationwide tour.
Pilgrims prayed before the relics and took time to learn about the lives of these six saints, who were all Knights of Columbus and were martyred during the Cristero War.
Reflecting on the visit during Independence Day weekend, Father Matthew Gonzalez, rector of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, said:
“I think the martyrs teach us this kind of boundless freedom when we put Christ at the center where He is King,” he continued. “So, I think it’s very significant that the cathedral is hosting their relics, not just in a general sense, but particularly now as we celebrate the 250th birthday of the nation.”

On Monday, June 29, 2026, our archdiocese will join dioceses worldwide in celebrating the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. As Pope Leo XIV has observed (quoting Saint Augustine), “the feast of the two Apostles is celebrated on one day. They too were one. For although they were martyred on different days, they were one.”
We are familiar with these two great saints. Peter is “the rock” whom Christ chose as the foundation on which his Church is built. Paul is the great missionary who proclaimed the Gospel through his words and actions and helped St. Peter and the other Apostles step beyond their comfort zones to engage in missionary work in the Church’s earliest days.
If we look closely at these two giants of our faith, we see they were ordinary people—like you and me—who were asked by Christ to do extraordinary things. Peter was a fisherman. The Gospels portray him as passionate, impulsive, and weak (despite his bravado). He protests loudly, “Lord, I will never betray you!” But when put to the test, he falls far short of his well-intentioned promise.
