🤖💚🌊 Charting new waters with #robotics: 80 pre-tertiary students put their coding, engineering and problem-solving skills to the test as they learnt to programme robots for marine conservation missions at #OneArena2026. Their challenges included using robots to restore manta ray habitats and sort waste that pollutes our oceans.

Organised by #NTUsg College of Engineering students, the robotics competition challenged participants to become ocean guardians and discover how technology and engineering can help protect marine life. Held at NTU and the National Library Building plaza, the event equipped participants with essential coding skills through a pre-competition workshop. After which, they put their knowledge into action, giving them the opportunity to dive deeper into the diverse world of engineering. 💡🐠

President of, Tay Ya Wen, said the organising team learnt how to create a competition that delivered meaningful educational value beyond just managing the event. Months of planning and collaboration reinforced the importance of teamwork, and the team was heartened to see how the competition can inspire youths to apply engineering to real-world challenges.

🪳🤿 Ready to dive into rescue missions: A diving suit... for a cockroach?

When disaster strikes, every second counts. Scientists from #NTUsg and have developed a soft, flexible diving suit that enables cyborg cockroaches to survive underwater and in low-oxygen environments for up to three hours.

Acting like a miniature scuba tank, the suit 🫧 generates oxygen and delivers it directly to the insect’s breathing system, allowing it to navigate flooded rubble and other hard-to-reach spaces during 🆘 search-and-rescue missions which existing robots may not be able to reach.

This breakthrough takes NTU’s pioneering cyborg insect research to new depths, opening up new possibilities for future #disaster-response operations and the inspection of flooded infrastructure.

🚀✨ Reaching for the stars in #SpaceTech: What if the next data centre was truly out of this world? 🛰️☁️

As demand for #AI computing power grows, #NTUsg researchers are helping to bring the idea of processing data in space closer to reality.

At the NTU Satellite Research Centre, engineers are testing AI chips for use in space and exploring technologies that could power future orbital computing systems.

One big challenge faced is energy. Solar panels need to be small enough for launch, yet able to unfold in orbit and capture enough sunlight to power energy-hungry AI chips. To tackle this, Assoc Prof Leong Wei Lin and Prof Nripan Mathews are developing flexible perovskite solar cells that will be tested on NTU’s next satellite later this year.

Transcelestial, founded by NTU alumni Rohit Jha and Mohammad Danesh, is also developing laser-based satellite communications that could one day enable high-speed transmission of data in space.

We just wrapped up an incredible 2-day STEM bootcamp with the brilliant students of Yuying Secondary School! Proudly brought to life by Mecatron, this hands-on workshop was all about pushing the boundaries of student innovation.
Here is a look at what these upper secondary engineers accomplished:

Hands-On Engineering: Students rolled up their sleeves to design, wire, and build their very own modular boats, from learning about physics fundamentals and mechanical assembly, to wiring and exploring electric microcontrollers. Through immersive, step-by-step workshops, the teams leveled up their knowledge across mechanical design, electronics, and software programming.

Industry Insights: To top it off, a Dyson Senior Design Engineer dropped by to share invaluable experiences, giving everyone a genuine taste of real-world product development.

Exclusive Access: Participants enjoyed an exclusive showcase where they got up close with the advanced #AutonomousUnderwaterVehicle engineered by our team.

The Grand Finale: The camp culminated in a high-energy pool competition to put their aquatic rovers to the ultimate test! This International Women in Engineering Day, we celebrate five recipients of the WiEST (Women in Engineering, Science and Technology) Development Grant whose paths into engineering have been as diverse as the research they pursue today.

Veronica Pereira’s dream of becoming a mad scientist or detective evolved into a PhD project developing more sustainable water treatment technologies.

Shin Jiyoon, meanwhile, followed her curiosity into engineering and now researches advanced materials for clean energy technologies.

For Maggie Gao Yuan, becoming an engineer was always the plan. Today, she uses AI and digital technologies to improve construction quality and efficiency.

Inspired by Marie Curie, Deng Jingyu pursued her ambition of becoming a scientist and now transforms plant-derived materials into solutions for real-world challenges.
