As an ex-blacksmith, he promised to forge something infinitely better.
To this day, the hinges remain empty — an invisible monument to his stubborn refusal to settle for mediocrity.
Rosie Steer is the author of Slow Seasons — a creative guide to reconnecting with nature the Celtic way. Before moving into a neglected Victorian tenement in Edinburgh in the autumn of 2022, she spent a long, hot summer stripping it back to its bare bones.
Then she started filling it: with pre-loved furniture sourced from reclamation yards and vintage fairs, with foraged finds from daily walks, with beeswax candles and forced spring bulbs, and a vintage trestle desk that came all the way from France.
Almost four years later, the first word people reach for when they walk in is cosy. That was exactly what she was aiming for.
Eileen Inglis moved into a 1960s ex-local authority flat in Newhaven with lower ceilings than she’d been used to, a smaller kitchen, and not a trace of Georgian. She had only a builder, a vision, and three weeks to renovate it. Decisions had to be made fast.
A year on, the flat is a personal sanctuary right across from the harbour — with a Scandinavian feel and treasures from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean.
It’s tucked away down a narrow lane, easy to miss, unless you already know it’s there.
Some people have lived in the area for twenty years without ever noticing it. But those who do find their way inside step into a space where time moves at its own pace.
For over two decades, Lewis Rosa has been running this place on his own terms.
He’s bought things he loved, sold things he shouldn’t have, wandered through the secret tunnels beneath the castle, and shared countless cups of tea with famous people.
Lewis insists there’s nothing particularly interesting about the shop. He shouldn’t be trusted on that.
Jane McMinn has sailed the Atlantic, trekked to gorillas in Uganda, skippered boats off the North Berwick coast, and spent twenty-odd years going out with the lobster fishermen at five in the morning. Now she lives in a sandstone Victorian house right on the beach — with two bulldogs, life-size Blues Brothers on the deck, animal print wallpaper in three rooms, mirrors on the ceiling, and a parrot immortalised in kitchen tiles.
The sea is just down the steps. She never gets tired of it.
It was 2020. The house — a converted servants’ quarters in Glasgow’s West End, dark by nature and dirty magnolia by previous owners’ choice — had become the place she spent most of her time. So she started painting it.
Anne Marie wasn’t looking for a new career, a creative identity, or a community of thousands. She was looking for something to take her mind off her illness and being stuck indoors.
“I mistakenly thought that to deal with the darkness I had to paint everything white,” she says. “I painted the whole hall white and it looked like a very depressing hospital corridor. So then I realised that actually I really had to embrace the darkness.”
What followed was something she couldn’t have planned: a house transformed into one of the most distinctive interiors in the city.
And alongside it, a whole new life.
Richard Murphy built his home in Edinburgh’s New Town as a conversation with the past, drawing on the architects who shaped the way he sees.
Perhaps the most influential of them is Carlo Scarpa: a poet of Venetian culture, deeply influenced by Japanese aesthetics, and a master at weaving the timeless with the contemporary.
In Richard’s home, if you manage to look past the countless clever mechanisms, panels, and mirrors, you’ll spot the winged lion of St Mark and fish in the little pond.
And that’s only part of what this puzzle-like house holds.
In Edinburgh’s New Town, architect Richard Murphy built himself a house that behaves like a three-dimensional puzzle.
Nine levels stack into a tiny plot. Rooms borrow space from each other. Walls turn into shelves. Mirrors stretch sightlines. Corners disappear. The materials carry years of reference, memory, and obsession.
This house doesn’t settle into one position. It keeps rearranging itself around the person who lives inside it; and this person is quite a character.

A handbag designer, she spent fifteen years building a fashion career in London before returning home to restore a crumbling 1860s granite farmhouse near where the Feugh meets the Dee.
When she bought it during the pandemic, the house was cold, damp, and close to falling apart.
Today, it’s warm, colourful, and alive in every sense. Rachel calls it her grown-up doll’s house; it’s exactly as she imagined it as a child: cosy, safe, and always ready to welcome the people she loves.
In this cottage, shelves are filled with second-hand finds, handmade details catch your eye at every turn, and the space is woven through with a love of colour and pattern.
Living here, close to family, community, and nature, Rachel has found what she had been missing: calm, freedom, and a true sense of coming home.
The film is now live on our YouTube.
