The first plant I talked about is an invasive shrub we are all likely to be familiar with. We see all over the west side of the Cascades in our woodlands and parks. It was brought over by English settlers and has spread rapidly. It forms dense thickets that crowd out native species.
I encountered Holly and English Hawthorn a lot on the island (Jacob’s Point trail and Andy’s Marine Park trail). Both plants are beautiful and feed wildlife, but the long term impact is devastating to the ecosystem and the majority of wildlife that depend on a variety of other native plant species that lose their opportunity to grow when these plants take over.

This course is primarily a carving workshop with the opportunity to build community and socialize with folks who share your interests (crafting, magic and witchery, etc..)
✨ Handcraft your own unique wand from start to finish
✨ Learn the lore of provided wand woods (hawthorn, rose, ironwood, holly, alder, willow + many more); their magical properties and symbolism and choose one for your wand base.
✨ Learn carving techniques, detail work, and knife safety
🪄 Enchant your wand (optional) by adding colorful dyes, carving sigils, embedding crystals, shells, stones, beads, and/or wrapping in metal wire (numerous colors to choose from)
🪄 Learn some symbolism of each “enchantment” object and color provided.
Wand woods are ethically sourced from nature by the instructors. Enchantments provided include dozens of stones and beads, several feet of variously colored and sized metal wire, shells, feathers, ~ a dozen colors of wood dye + all the accessories and materials required to add these objects to your wand. “Enchanting” is optional (but very fun).

Like all Amanitas, it produces a bright white spore print.
Spore printing is an essential skill for anyone interested in mycology or mushroom foraging.
Spore prints help in identifying mushroom species. The color (as well as the shape and size of the spores if you’re using a microscope for deep intel) provide crucial information about the mushrooms identity and taxonomy.
Taking a spore print is one of the first steps in keying out a mushroom. Some color photo field guides are divided into spore color chapters.
Use a white or black piece of paper or a piece of foil for a neutralish background. Some people will tape a black and a white piece together so the page is half and half to ensure they can see the color of spores well if they happen to be light.

It gets mistaken for a mushroom because it’s not green like a normal plant. If you don’t believe me, simply type “is this a mushroom?” In a search bar like on Reddit and you’ll see ghost pipe and candy stick are always in question ❤️🤍
This weirdo doesn’t photosynthesize but instead gets it’s nutrients by tapping into the mycelial network that’s connected to trees and other plants. It takes advantage of a symbiosis occurring between fungi and sugar-producing plants, deriving nutrients for itself and purportedly giving nothing back. 😈
Not true in existential ways, however, as you can see, the highly important bumblebee benefits from Allotropa’s pollen. You see the pink-hued pollen baskets on its legs?? So cute.
“Allotropa” is derived from the Greek word meaning “different nourishment”. “Virgata” means “striped”
Other names for this plant are “Devil’s Wand” and “Sugarstick”
This plant is not edible despite its name(s).
Other mycotrophic plants in the Ericaceae family include Pinedrops, Groundcone, Pinesap, and Ghost Pipe (among others).
It’s always a treat to find these strange and colorful plants. They usually get mistaken for mushrooms because of their odd appearance and lack of green tissues.
If you find Candystick, remember the location because in the fall, you’re veryyy likely to find the prized edible mushroom Matsutake! The Candystick plant parasitizes the mycelium of Tricholoma matsutake almost exclusively.

She’s not allowed to point randomly or helicopter. Each point has to be intentional
The majority of the video is zoomed in - some of us go out of frame making it appear like she points at nothing, however,
Raindrops were splattering all around us. So if she did point at empty space, we ignored it. Her role is to point at sounds.
This forest is in the west foothills of Kulshan (Mt. Baker) in the North Cascades
Going barefoot is encouraged but no one did on this day because it was raining and near freezing.
Another way to play/win is to make the sneaker who got the keys return to their original spot without being heard by the keeper.
You can also put a timer on the game. If the keeper guards the keys successfully for x minutes, they win.
Change the substrate to adjust the challenge level.
