For this week’s #FosterFriday, we’re talking grooming - and why it’s such an important part of fostering. At, we see firsthand how regular grooming can completely transform a dog - not just physically, but emotionally too. For many foster dogs, grooming is one of the first safe forms of care and connection they experience.
🐾 Why grooming matters:
A well-groomed dog is a healthier dog. Regular brushing helps prevent painful matting, reduces shedding, and keeps skin conditions in check. Grooming also gives fosters a chance to spot concerns early - like lumps, parasites, irritation, or injuries - before they become bigger issues.
🐾 It’s not one-size-fits-all:
Every dog has different grooming needs depending on their coat, breed, and lifestyle. A fluffy double coat needs very different care than a short-haired pup. Learning what your foster dog needs helps them stay comfortable and supported.
🐾 Simple tips to stay on top of it:
— Brush regularly (daily or weekly depending on coat type)
— Keep nails trimmed to avoid discomfort and joint strain
— Clean ears gently to help prevent infections
— Bathe as needed -not too often, but enough to keep skin healthy
— Introduce grooming slowly and positively, especially with rescue dogs
🐾 For rescue dogs, patience is everything:
Many rescue dogs come from situations where grooming was neglected - or where touch itself felt unsafe. For foster dogs, grooming can be a huge part of rebuilding trust.
Taking it slow, using positive reinforcement, and making the experience gentle can help them feel safe in their bodies again.
As a foster, you’re the first one they’ll trust so bathing them yourself is a great start before adding in a trusted groomer to your foster dog’s care team. It’ll make a huge difference in both their emotional and physical wellbeing.

Sweet Winston was first rescued by North of 54 Dog Rescue after being found malnourished and limping. Thanks to the incredible care of his SK and BC fosters, he has made a beautiful recovery and is finally getting the chance to act like the happy puppy he was always meant to be.
In his fosters’ words..
“He’s a little shy at first, but warms up quickly once he feels comfortable. He LOVES to play! He’s happy to entertain himself with toys, but also always up for a good game of fetch. He’s crate trained and has a soft spot for emotional support shoes 😂
He’s SUPER smart and very food motivated. He can pick up a new trick in just 1–2 tries. He already listens well to basic commands (no, sit,stay, drop it) and seems eager to please.
He’s adorable, snuggly, and full of personality… including being an early riser who thinks 6 a.m. is the perfect time to play.
He may also sneakily uncover the sock you’ve been missing since 2021.”

This friendly, affectionate girl thrives in the great outdoors. Whether she’s out for a walk, playing fetch at the park, or following an interesting scent, Callie approaches life with curiosity and enthusiasm. She would happily make every day an adventure.
At home, Callie is a loving and gentle companion. She has a heart the size of her paws 🐾
She enjoys playing independently with her toys, relaxing with her people, and settling in for a cozy movie night. She is quiet, comfortable being left alone for reasonable periods, and travels well in the car.
Still very much a big puppy at heart, Callie can become overexcited when faced with new or stimulating situations. She is actively working on her impulse control and is responding beautifully to training. Having lived near an elementary school, she is familiar with the sounds of children and is learning that not everyone appreciates her enthusiastic affection.
Callie would thrive in an active home where she can get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.
Due to her size and exuberance, she would be best suited to a household with adults or older children. She could do well as the only dog or with a compatible canine companion.

Meet Grizzly (“Grizzy”) and Kodiak (“Kodi”)… or as we like to call them… our little bear cubs 🐻 🐻
These adorable brothers were found as strays and got a second chance thanks to the amazing team at North of 54 before making their way into our care.
KODI: ADOPTED
(Black colouring) A shy little guy who likes to hang back and observe (usually from behind mom 🥺). But don’t be fooled… he’s also the sneaky adventurer of the two! Most likely to grab a shoe and zoom away like it’s the best game ever. Loves naps and loves running.
GRIZZY:
(Brown colouring) The social butterfly (and slightly bigger one) of the duo! Curious and happy to meet new people and animals. He’s a good boy at home and prefers to stay out of trouble… He loves Kodi so much that it may take him a bit of time to adjust to being on his own, once he is with his furever family.

The first day with a foster dog can feel like a lot - for both of you!
They’ve likely just come from transport, a shelter, or an unfamiliar environment. New sounds, new people, new routines. It’s a big shift, and it can show up in different ways: shutting down, pacing, sleeping all day, or just feeling unsure.
That’s why the first 24 hours aren’t about training, socializing, or “figuring them out.” It’s about decompression.
✔️ Introduce them to their new space - water, food bowls, bed, and other comfort areas
✔️ Keep things calm - have some treats on hand to build trust. It’s a small gesture to show you’re a friend
✔️ Let them rest - they’ve likely had a big, overwhelming day. Sleep helps regulate their nervous system and begin to decompress
✔️ Give them space- avoid too much handling or attention right away. Let them come to you when they feel safe and ready
You might not see their personality right away, and that’s okay. Trust builds quietly in these early moments. A consistent routine, a quiet place to land, and gentle patience go a long way.
You don’t need to do everything perfectly. You just need to make them feel safe, because when a dog feels safe, everything else can follow!

Shadow is a 1 year old, mixed breed pup with moderate energy levels. He’s happiest as your adventures buddy. Exploring the outdoors, playing at the park, and soaking up all the fun. But he’s just as content laying low at home, offering his expert cuddles.
