🐈 PREORDER: 'Nothing's About to Happen to Me' by Mitski 🐈‍⬛

The acclaimed indie songwriter returns with a follow-up to 2023's 'The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We'.

We’ve been following Mitski from her humble DIY origins to selling out huge venues worldwide and becoming somewhat of a cultural phenomenon. Each record has offered something different to the last, from the grungy power pop of ‘Bury Me at Makeout Creek’ to the expansive wider breakthrough ‘Be the Cowboy’, the synth-tinged ‘Laurel Hell’ and the lush chamber pop of her last record, she’s become one of the most unpredictable songwriters in modern indie.

Her eighth studio album was composed with her touring band plus arrangements from sessions musicians, with the peppy, catchy as owt’ noise pop lead single ‘Where’s My Phone?’ hinting at approaches in the vein of her earlier works.

Released through Dead Oceans next month on LP, CD, tape, and limited indies-only yellow coloured vinyl.
PREORDER: ‘Sub Zero’ by Kevin Richard Martin

Kevin Richard Martin brings his 2022 full-length of dubby, glacial, isolationist ambient to vinyl for the first time.

Poising minimalism with tense low-end production and cavernous electronic swells, ‘Sub Zero’ is an immense listen of deeply atmospheric ambient forged in dub bass, grainy industrial textures, and chilly drones, hearing Martin at his most cinematic. Alongside previous KRM ambient releases, there are nods to Ben Frost (particularly ‘By the Throat’), the arctic dub techno blusters of Porter Ricks, and Pan Sonic’s serrated industrial bite.

It’s the sort of record primed for a late night/early morning listen or wander in the pitch black somewhere. You can easily imagine it as a film score too. For me, this has the bleak frostbitten horror of ‘The Thing’ written all over it.

On 2LP vinyl with remastered audio on his own Pressure label.
REISSUE OF THE WEEK: 'Whichever Way You Are Going You Are Going Wrong (Expanded Edition)' by Woo

Immense debut LP of intoxicating ambient psychedelia from the Ives brothers.

Released way back in 1982, ‘Whichever…’ introduced us to Woo’s minimalist yet incredibly trippy and unique blend of psych-folk and electronic new age complete with touches of left-field pop, jazz, and dub.

Their combinations of organic and acoustic instrumentation with analog electronics makes for an astonishing sonic stew which can be incredibly pretty and mellow but also sometimes atonal and unsettling.

Check out Clinton’s deep dive retrospective review via the bio link as he picks up on influences from everyone from Eno and The Durutti Column to Stan Getz, King Tubby, Pharoah Sanders, and more.

Both LP variants include a bonus 12’’. Also on CD.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: 'Shaking Hand' by Shaking Hand

All the best bits of early post-rock and math rock, plus post-punk, emo, slowcore, and DIY U.S. indie in one spot.

The Manchester trio impress with their debut album hearing knotty guitar-led instrumentals meet occasional intoxicatingly catchy vocals and intricate rhythm section performances.

Check this one out if you dig Slint, Women, Polvo, Pavement, and early Modest Mouse.

DINKED EDITION 389: 'OUTTANATIONAL' by Pigeon

The Dinked package for the first record from the Falle Nioke-fronted group includes an exclusive variant, mirrorboard sleeve, and signed/numbered print.

Pigeon are a newly formed five-piece hailing from Margate who play dancefloor-primed, rhythmical, playful, and propulsive alt-dance, deeply rooted in groove and genre-fusions which span continents.

Taking in psychedelia, Afrobeat and highlife, indie-electronic, funk, dance-punk, soul, and krautrock, 'OUTTANATIONAL' is as cosmic as it is restless, making for an intoxicating, infectious mix up which gives off like William Onyeabor jamming it up with late 70s New York new wave icons.

DINKED EDITION 388: 'Losing' by SLAG

The Brighton quintet release their debut as a Dinked set. Alongside the exclusive vinyl variant you’ll receive a 12-page ‘SLAG-mag’ and a signed/hand-numbered photo.

SLAG blend melodic indie pop/rock with the proggy instrumentation of knotty rhythms and slick math rock guitar lines, complete with influences from noise rock, emo revival, and jazz-fusion.

Drops in early March via Big Scary Monsters.

RIYL: TTNG, Delta Sleep, Plantoid, Tricot, Minus The Bear
DINKED EDITION 387: ‘Crystalpunk’ by Chalk

Chalk bring their debut album to the Dinked series, the set featuring an exclusive variant plus a signed postcard.

The Belfast genre-melders follow their ‘Conditions’ EP trilogy with their anticipated first full-length. Expect tense, noisy, and discordant industrialised dance-punk with club inspired kinetic rhythms and the direct dancefloor drive of EBM, techno, and futurepop.

RIYL: Mandy Indiana, SCALER, Ditz, Snapped Ankles, Gilla Band.

Released in March on Alter Music.

DINKED EDITION 386: ‘Elsewhere, Always’ by overpass

Birmingham outfit overpass announce their debut album, dropping as a limited Dinked variant with a signed sleeve, alternative artwork oversleeve, and splatter vinyl variant.

The Brum quartet have penned an impressive ten track set of indie rock meets grungy power pop, with inspirations coming from garage rock revival, dream pop, Heartland rock, and indie pop.
PREORDER: 'PLAY ME' by Kim Gordon

Kim returns with her third studio solo LP.

The one-time Sonic Youth bassist returns with a follow up to her acclaimed 2024 full-length ‘The Collective’ and our Album of the Year winning ‘No Home Record’.

Though somewhat closer to the noise rock of S.Y. than the post-industrial, electronified hip-hop beat heaviness of her two prior records, ‘PLAY ME’ hears Gordon as inventive and adventurous as ever. Melodies are clearer cut and less fractured, while the rhythms draw on krautrock and pulsing four-to-the floors, its individual tracks shorter, snappier, and more eclectic overall.

Released in mid-March via Matador on LP, CD, and white coloured vinyl.
